Today’s blog is republished from my friends at TheAlternativeDaily, a leading publisher of daily alternative health tips that I personally read every day… The original article can be found here:

I bet if you looked in the mirror you wouldn’t say to yourself, “I look a little fungusy today.” More than likely, you don’t really know what it looks like to be fungusy.

Truth be told, you can’t really look like fungus (or a mushroom for that matter), but there is a good chance that fungus, to some degree or another, is compromising your health.

Don’t get too wigged out when I use the word fungus. We are all covered in fungal communities; they take up residence on us and within us, forming tight-knit colonies according to their kind. Many of these fungi are harmless, and a good number are quite necessary for health. However, when the bad guys move into the neighborhood, things get funky.

Fungi vs. bacteria

Before I go on, let’s first take a quick look at the difference between fungi and bacteria. Both are minute organisms that are found in almost every ecosystem on earth, and both can associate with other groups of living things. As mentioned above, they can either be harmless and necessary in biological processes, or they can be highly dangerous.

The main difference between fungi and bacteria is their cellular structure. Bacteria are prokaryotic organisms, meaning they do not possess a nucleus, while fungi are eukaryotic organisms, meaning they have a very well-defined nucleus. While both organisms have cell walls, what makes up these cell walls is different. Fungi, for the most part, have long hollow tubes that form networks (hyphae).

Each of these tubes is bordered by a strong wall made from chitin — the same substance that forms the exoskeletons of insects. Hyphae grow from their tips and reach out in a branching manner to form a network called mycelium. As the mycelium grows, it produces fruiting bodies and other structures that are rich with reproductive spores.

Bacteria multiply by binary fission when parent bacterium divide to make the same sized daughter cells. Fungi reproduce both sexually and asexually by a process of branching fragmentation and budding (as in the case of yeast).

Fungi are scavengers, feeding off dead stuff — kind of like the buzzards you see cleaning up roadkill along the highway. Bacteria, on the other hand, are a little more sophisticated in the fact that they can actually manufacture their own food.

Types of fungal infections

There are several fungal infections that result from different types of fungi entering the body.

For instance, Aspergillus fungi can be inhaled through the mouth or nose and can cause fever, cough and wheezing. In very severe instances, this fungal infection can spread to other organs including the brain, skin and bones.

Cryptococcus neoformans is found in the soil or in bird droppings. This fungus also enters the body through the mouth or nostrils and can cause a lung infection resulting in a cough or chest pain.

Histoplasma capsulatum is a fungus that is commonly found in eastern and central United States in soil that contains bird and bat feces. When spores are disturbed, they can be inhaled and can cause flu-like symptoms, body aches, fever and cough.

Candida albicans

Yeast, also known as Candida albicans, is a type of fungus that is present in all humans. The fungus is found on both the skin and mucus membranes. In small amounts, it is harmless to the body.

However, when the growth of yeast increases dramatically, the results can be absolutely devastating. Did you know that yeast overgrowth is considered to be one of the most prevalent, yet unrecognized conditions to man?

When you have a healthy body, the yeast is kept under control by the healthy bacteria within your body. However, medical antibiotics — and those found in much of the meat we eat — will upset the balance of your friendly bacteria. Since antibiotics are nonselective, they work to weaken the good bacteria that keep yeast in check.

The yeast then begins to flourish, and before you know it, it’s completely out of control. Antibiotics are not the only contributor to the upset of your healthy bacteria; cortisone, some birth control pills and certain drugs have an effect on it, as well.

Once the yeast has overgrown in your body, it thrives on sugar, carbohydrates, moldy foods, fermented foods and vinegar. If you’ve ever noticed that your cravings for any of these are very strong, chances are, you have a yeast overgrowth in your body.

When the level of yeast is elevated in your body, toxins are released into your bloodstream in high amounts. These waste products have a profound effect on your well-being and are linked to many health problems.

Signs of yeast gone wild

The effects of yeast overgrowth will worsen over time, and will seriously compromise physical, mental and emotional well-being. According to researchers, hidden, deviant fungus may be the reason for any number of seemingly unrelated health complaints.

Just another reason why it is so important to not look at symptoms in isolation. Very often, you will find that two seemingly unrelated things, like muscle twitches and frequent bladder infections, are the result of yeast gone wild.

Here are 32 signs that yeast may have moved in and is slowly taking over your body. If you suffer frequently from more than three of these, it may be time to learn more about yeast.

The spit test

Yeast overgrowth is one of the most difficult health issues to detect because of the small amount that is present in everyone. The best way to determine if you have yeast overgrowth is by taking a look at your lifestyle and diet.

Do you crave sweets and carbohydrates, experience constant illness, have a mental illness that doesn’t respond to medication, or generally feel “unwell?” Chances are you’re experiencing yeast overgrowth and need to make some changes to your diet.

You can also try the spit test. Yeah, we know, it sounds a little gross, but a spit test offers a really good analysis of what is going on inside your body and may show signs of a yeast overgrowth. The best time to take this test is as soon as you wake up in the morning, before you even get out of bed.

How to do the spit test

Gather as much spit as possible in your mouth.

Spit into a clear glass with room temperature filtered water.

Watch carefully.

The saliva will float at first. Watch to see if there are thin projections extending downward into the water after 15 minutes or so. They may look like hairs or strings. If this happens you may have a candida overgrowth problem.

If your saliva is very cloudy and sinks to the bottom within a few minutes, or parts of the saliva slowly sink, yeast overgrowth is a possibility. The particles are yeast colonies which band together.

If your spit is still floating after about an hour, it is likely that your yeast is under control.

The downward spiral

Candida can be linked to serious health problems. Once this fungus begins to thrive in the body, general health will spiral downward. The cravings for sugar and other foods that nourish the yeast will get stronger, and on and on it will go.

Eventually, the immune system becomes so weak that the symptoms are no longer tolerable. Often physicians will prescribe antibiotics to treat the symptoms, thus killing off the last of any friendly bacteria. When yeast is in this advanced state, depression and suicidal thoughts are very common.

How to kick the bad fungus to the curb

According to the National Candida Center, if you have symptoms and your spit test is positive for yeast, it is a pretty good indication that you have a candida overgrowth problem. The first step in addressing the problem is to adjust your diet.

Eliminate all processed foods and sugar, and begin eating only wholesome, organic foods if possible. The following foods also help the body heal from the assault of candida overgrowth and encourage the proliferation of healthy bacteria:

1. Coconut oil

This tropical treasure has strong antifungal properties, which will kill the bad bacteria and support immune system functioning. Replace your other cooking oils with coconut oil and add liberally to foods or your coffee. Aim for two tablespoons daily to start.

2. Garlic

Garlic also has strong antifungal properties and will destroy unfriendly bacteria while encouraging the growth of good bacteria. It detoxifies and encourages healthy liver and colon functioning. Use garlic liberally to jazz up your food or chew freely on two to three cloves per day. Note: Raw garlic is far superior in its efficacy.

3. Seaweed

It may not be too appealing to look at, but seaweed is a highly nutrient-dense food that can fight against yeast overgrowth. Many times, people with yeast overgrowth suffer from hyperthyroidism, and seaweed is rich in iodine, which helps balance the thyroid gland. In addition, seaweed is a detoxifier and helps to flush toxins out of the body while cleaning the digestive system. Eat fresh seaweed or take high-quality kelp supplements for best results.

4. Pumpkin seeds

These tiny seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which have antiviral and antifungal properties. They help to reduce the inflammation caused by yeast and fight depression as well. Add pumpkin seeds to your cereal, salads or even eat them as a tasty snack.

5. Ginger

Ginger is a powerful detoxifier that increases circulation and flushes toxins out of the liver while supporting the immune system. It helps reduce intestinal gas and soothes inflammation from yeast overgrowth. Make ginger tea by grating a 1-inch piece of ginger root and adding it to two cups of boiling water and a fresh slice of lemon.

Once you get your diet under control and introduce foods that fight the bad bacteria, you can consider taking a high-quality probiotic or eating a little bit of fermented food daily to keep your healthy bacteria count in good order.

Exercising daily and learning how to manage stress in your life will also help to keep fungus from taking over your body.

By: Cat Ebeling, RN, MSN-PHN, co-author of the best-sellers: The Fat Burning Kitchen, The Top 101 Foods that Fight Aging & The Diabetes Fix

You may be seeing mushrooms as ingredients in everything from kombucha to coffee drinks to protein powders and supplements to healthy snacks lately. Mushrooms are everywhere and they have been discovered as the new ‘superfood’.

Medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries around the world to fight cancer, enhance or modulate immune response, boost brain power and focus, increase antioxidants, lower blood pressure, help with sleep and relaxation and more. Mushrooms are reported to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular-protective, antidiabetic, liver-protective, and anticancer properties.

While mushrooms are not the richest source of common micronutrients like magnesium, calcium, and vitamins, they are full of harder-to-get nutrients like selenium, copper, and pantothenic acid—as well as having some unique nutrients you can’t get in other foods.

Did you know you can take fresh mushrooms, lay them out in the sun for a couple of hours and they will synthesize more vitamin D? Yes, indeed. Pretty awesome.

The most interesting properties of mushrooms come from the rare and unique compounds that won’t show up in any nutrient database. Many edible mushrooms contain substances that perform with therapeutic, medicinal, or pharmacological-like effects.

Some of the more popular and well-known medicinal mushrooms include shiitake, reishi, cordyceps, maitake, chaga, cordyceps, turkey tail, and lion’s mane.

While these are often ingredients sold in powdered form, many of these are also showing up in the produce section of your favorite health food store.

Nootropics are a new form of supplementing to increase brain power, focus, mood, memory, and fight dementia. Several varieties of medicinal mushrooms fit in this category, including, chaga, lion’s mane, cordyceps, maitake, and reishi. And what college student or aspiring professional doesn’t want to increase their brain power?

Mushrooms are also known for their powerful immune-enhancing properties. Many medicinal mushrooms not only make the immune system stronger to fight off pathogens, but these mushrooms also help the body destroy cancer cells as well.

Some varieties of mushrooms can help to modulate the immune system in a way that helps the immune system become more balanced. Strong enough to fight off dangerous pathogens and cancer, but calm enough to lower inflammation and auto-immune health issues.

Here’s an in-depth look at some of the most powerful health-enhancing mushrooms:

Shiitake

Primary Benefits: Best for strengthening the immune system, better liver function, and supporting the cardiovascular system.

Shiitakes are one of my favorite mushrooms, aside from their major health benefits. Shiitakes have a delicious, earthy, almost meaty texture, that makes them a beneficial addition to soups, stews, meat, and vegetable dishes. Shiitakes are denser and higher in protein and iron than many other types of mushrooms.

Shiitakes contains an antioxidant called “L-ergothioneine” which specifically protects the cells from oxidative damage. This amazing antioxidant can only be obtained through diet—most notably, shiitakes.

Shiitakes also contain a polysaccharide—a type of special carbohydrate—that has cancer tumor fighting properties along with immune boosting abilities. This substance, lentinan, is very effective for the immune system. In fact, for people who are immune-suppressed or immune-depressed, lentinan provides added protection.

Reishi

Primary Benefits: Calming, anti-anxiety. Sleep aid and immune modulator.

This mushroom is a very popular medicinal mushroom in that helps alleviate anxiety, depression and help people sleep better. In addition, this powerhouse mushroom helps lower inflammation, fight cancer, and aid in weight loss.

Other reishi mushroom benefits include blood sugar regulation, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, and tumor-fighting capabilities.

What makes this mushroom stand out, however is the calming properties it contains. Reishi contains a compound called triterpene which is the active ingredient in its mood-boosting abilities.

Reishi is also valuable as a treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome. A study in Thailand treated subjects with reishi mushroom or placebo. At the end of the study those who were using the reishi reported a significant increase in quality of life, compared the placebo group.

Reishi supports the growth of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), which helps boost learning, memory, and longevity.

Many of the polysaccharides contained in reishi mushroom are associated with immune function, and will help modulate the immune system. It is also known to improve sleep, reduce stress and fatigue.

Lion’s Mane

Primary Benefits: Mental clarity, brain function and nerve growth and regeneration.

Lion’s mane is an interesting looking fungus, looking like a big white puffball or even—at first glance—a little like cauliflower.

Do you ever struggle with brain fog? Lion’s mane will help re-establish your mental clarity. This puffball of a mushroom is full of antioxidants and helps immune function, like many other mushrooms.

However, lion’s mane strength comes from the fact that it boosts the production of Nerve Growth Factor and myelin, which is the all-important insulation around your nerves.

NFG and myelin are critical to brain and nerve health. When things go awry, it results in serious neurological diseases including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and MS. Lion’s mane protects from these life-changing illnesses.

In addition, lion’s mane helps improve cognition, making it an excellent learning aid, while calming anxiety and irritability. Sounds like a college student’s best friend.

Lion’s mane also helps to enhance chemotherapy treatments in cancer patients and minimizes the toxic effects.

Cordyceps

Primary Benefits: Increases energy, physical strength and endurance, aids in muscle recovery.

Cordyceps has an interesting history. In the wild, cordyceps is a parasitic fungus that grows on a particular type of caterpillar. Cordyceps is now cultivated so it does not have to be grown on caterpillars, although it still retains its amazing medicinal properties.

Over 200 clinical studies show cordyceps mushrooms improve athletic performance by increasing blood flow and boosting ATP synthesis for greater energy and strength. ATP is the compound that gives our cells energy.

In addition, cordyceps helps to enhance lactate clearance. Lactate is the substance that builds up in muscles during strenuous exercise and creates that muscle ‘burn’ and fatigue. Cordyceps is also known as an antioxidant and reduces oxidative stress, making it the ideal medicinal mushroom for improved athletic performance and better recovery.

In fact, cordyceps first gained a lot of attention, when, in 1993, Chinese female athletes began breaking world records in distance running. Their performance was attributed to a nutrition regimen that involved cordyceps supplementation.

Another study from Japan showed significant increases in creatine and catecholamines in men supplementing with cordyceps. Catecholamines help the body respond to stress, and help the body with “fight-or-flight” reactions. Catecholamines are made in the adrenals as a reaction to stress. The primary catecholamines are epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and dopamine.

And yet another study on endurance cyclists found that cordyceps not only improved cycling performance but it also helped prevent overtraining syndrome (OTS), due to the high levels of antioxidants cordyceps contains.

Researchers concluded that during prolonged exercise ingesting cordyceps helps to elicit superior efficiency while saving energy.

Cordyceps also acts as an immune stimulator by increasing cancer-fighting T cells and ‘Natural Killer’ cells, while prolonging the life and power of our body’s white blood cells. This increases its ability to fight pathogens, infections, and cancer. Cordyceps also acts as an immune modulator, keeping it from overreacting in autoimmune situations. And cordyceps also has a powerful effect on the gut’s immune function as well.

Last but not least, cordyceps helps men increase their testosterone production. Testosterone is necessary for normal sperm development and sex drive. Cordyceps has long been used for the enhancement of sexual function in human beings. Evidence shows that cordyceps can improve reproductive activity, enhance the libido, and restore reproductive function in both men and women. A specific protein found in cordyceps may increase blood flow and help the penis trap blood to improve erections, thereby improving sexual function.

Chaga

Primary Benefits: Boosts immune function, supports liver health, brain health and longevity.

Chaga is not your typical mushroom. It is a fungus that grows on the bark of birch trees in northern Canada, Alaska, Siberia, Northern Europe, and Korea.

Chaga is one of the most potent sources of antioxidants on the planet, so chaga is very efficient at fighting free radicals, stimulating the immune system, protecting the liver, and lowering inflammation. Chaga can also slow aging of the skin, help to lower LDL cholesterol and prevent or slow the growth of cancer.

Chaga’s action on the immune system specifically enhances the activation of NK cells – natural killer cells. These powerful immune cells are part of the innate immune system—our first line of defense—against viruses, bacteria, and other harmful pathogens.

Studies on chaga in animals show it to help preserve acetylcholine for better brain function, learning and memory. Acetylcholine is a brain chemical which is critical for creating new memories, reasoning, focus, cognition, and growth of new synapses. Lack of acetylcholine can result in diseases like ADD, ADHD and Alzheimer’s. Chaga, lion’s mane and reishi are the top three medicinal mushrooms for better brain health.

Avoid chaga if you take blood thinning medication, diabetes medication or if you have kidney disease. Chaga is higher in oxalates, which may prevent the absorption of some nutrients and can bother those who are sensitive to high oxalate foods.

Turkey Tail

Primary Benefits: Boosts immune function, increases natural killer cells, fights cancer

Turkey Tail mushroom is one of the best-researched medicinal mushrooms. It grows on dead logs all over the world, and gets its name from the brown and tan rings that look like the tail feathers of a turkey. It’s very pretty.

Many of the medicinal mushrooms exhibit strong anticancer properties, probably due to their high levels of powerful antioxidants. But turkey tail takes it a step further.

Turkey tail improves the body’s immune function by stimulating cytokine production, which helps to increase the body’s supply of natural killer cells (part of the innate immune systems—your first line of defense) and other immune-boosting functions.

Turkey tail contains a special compound called “polysaccharide-K” that stimulates the immune system, especially in fighting cancer. PSK is so effective that it’s become an approved anticancer prescription drug in Japan.

Turkey tail has also been shown to improve the survival rate of people with particular types of cancer, including gastric cancer. Due to the beneficial compounds it contains, turkey tail is often used with traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy as a natural way to fight certain cancers.

Turkey tail can also strengthen the immune systems of those cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, enhancing the ability of chemotherapy to work on cancer cells. Turkey tail contains some of the highest levels of beta-glucans of all mushrooms and keeps our immune systems healthy—especially when turkey tail is taken over extended periods of time.

Maitake

Primary Benefit: Helps regulate blood pressure, immune function and relieve depression.

The maitake mushroom is native to northeastern Japan. Its name is derived from the Japanese words for dancing mushroom. Another legend says it was named after people dancing with happiness upon finding it because of its incredible healing properties.

This mushroom, like many mushrooms, is a type of adaptogen. Adaptogens help the body with physical and mental stresses. They also work to help balance any unbalanced systems in the body.

Maitake mushrooms are known to help regulate the immune system by stimulating specific immune cells such as the white blood cells, natural killer cells, and T cells.

The mushroom contains polysaccharides such as beta-glucans, which have been linked to healthy cell growth and turnover. Maitake mushrooms support certain cancer therapies, help chronic fatigue syndrome, protect the liver, fight allergies, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

It’s primary value as a nootropic (brain boosting chemical) comes from its ability to help relieve depression. Studies with animals show that supplementing with maitake helps alleviate depression by sensitizing certain receptors in the brain.

Basic Tips on Mushrooms

If you plan to eat the mushroom as a food (and many of these are delicious to eat), be sure to cook them. Raw mushrooms are difficult to digest or metabolize. And many mushrooms are slightly toxic when raw.

The best way to cook most any mushroom is to sauté them in butter or olive oil with some garlic. Add sea salt and cracked black pepper and serve alongside a juicy, grass-fed steak and you will be in heaven.

Dried mushrooms—especially from an Asian grocery store—are far less expensive and work great added to soups and steps or sauces.

There are many types of mushroom supplements available in health foods stores, as well as powders, mixes and proteins that contain mushroom extract. Mushroom extracts are now available in ready to serve coffees, kombuchas, and other drinks as well.

Medicinal mushrooms can shape the mind, but this gem can improve your memory in minutes.

This song sharpens your memory in 7 minutes

See this, it improves memory:

This brain scan comes from a study conducted for a project, the 8-Minute Memory Song.

What does that mean?

The right-hand image shows the “zombie cells” filled and sluggish brain.

The brain is smaller and weaker.

And what’s concerning is, if you’re over 50, your brain is at a higher risk of getting filled with these “Zombie Cells.”

However, the left-hand image shows a clear, active, and youthful brain.

The brain is healthier, bigger, and more powerful.

The memory is stronger and your brain cells are protected.

This is exactly what you want.

The key to a brain like this is to get rid of these toxic “Zombie Cells.”

These toxic cells are linked to a weaker memory, brain fog, and less brain power.

Help get rid of these “Zombie Cells” by listening to this Memory Song.

10 seconds after pressing “PLAY,” people experience…

Accelerated learning speed…

Extensive, clearer memory…

Brain fog dissipation…

Increase in brain size growth…

…and much more.

Researchers assumed this song was just theory… maybe even a placebo.

But after 16,366 Americans found themselves super-charging their brain power and memory – from the comfort of their home – you can’t ignore this new phenomenon.

Once you see this quick presentation below, you’ll be a believer:

>> 8-Minute “Memory Song” Enhances Memory At Any Age

By: Cat Ebeling, RN, MSN-PHN, co-author of the best-sellers: The Fat Burning Kitchen, The Top 101 Foods that Fight Aging & The Diabetes Fix

Cleaning and disinfecting have become something that everyone is more aware of these days. Unfortunately, many cleaners and disinfectants are highly toxic to our bodies. Cleaning products contain a wide variety of harsh chemicals, including substances classified as Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs.

Conventional cleaning products often contain harsh cleansing agents and artificial fragrances and colors. VOCs and other chemicals are released when using cleaning supplies in your home, and can contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions, asthma and even cancer.

Toxic chemicals in everyday household cleaners include:

Carcinogens – cancer causing agents

Endocrine disruptors – in the form of xenoestrogens (chemical estrogenic compounds) Xenoestrogens can lead to infertility, sexual dysfunction, miscarriage, menstrual issues, gynecomastia and cancer.

Neurotoxins –toxic to the brain and nerves, can cause headaches, mood changes and even diseases like Parkinson’s.

These substances can be absorbed through our skin and lungs causing rashes, asthma, and irritating the nose and throat. They are especially harmful to our vulnerable family members, children and pets.

Research shows that many of the chemicals found in conventional house-cleaning products are bio-accumulative and very toxic. That means that once in your system, they actually stay in your system and are hard to clear. This makes you more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases and cancers.

In addition, many of the ingredients found in conventional cleaning products are very bad for the environment, and can harm plants and wildlife, contaminate drinking water, and adversely affect soil and even air quality. Check out the Environmental Protection Agency and the Environmental Working Group to learn more.

What About Natural Cleaning Products?

Many of the “natural” cleaning products found in the grocery store can actually have harmful chemicals in them, in spite of their “natural” labeling. Unfortunately, there are no laws in place that demand companies are transparent about all of the ingredients in their products. This means they can make false claims about their so-called “natural” ingredients.

The other big problem with the natural, store-bought cleaning products is their price tag. They are often up to twice as expensive as the conventional cleaning products.

But you don’t need to spend a fortune on natural products. Good old-fashioned vinegar, baking soda, essential oils and other inexpensive ingredients found in your pantry can clean just as well or better than conventional or natural store-bought cleaning products, without any toxic by-products.

These natural products are inexpensive and versatile to keep on hand to create your own cleaning products:

Vinegar—One of the best all-round natural cleaning ingredients. Vinegar contains acetic acid, a gentle acid with antibacterial properties. Distilled white vinegar works best for cleaning.

Castile soap—A versatile, gentle soap, can be used on your body, but also very effective for cleaning purposes. Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile is great for this.

Baking soda—Baking soda has a number of excellent uses, for scrubbing, scouring, laundry and more. Always keep a good quantity of baking soda on hand.

Essential oils—Tea tree oil, lavender, rosemary, orange, lemon or eucalyptus oils. Most all essential oils are antibacterial and antiviral, so choose the scent (s) you like best. My favorite is sweet orange essential oil.

Microfiber cloths, sponges

Empty spray bottles

These two DIY cleaning products will clean most everything in your house. Once is a homemade soft scrub and the other is an all-purpose spray cleaner. There are lots of variations of these online. Be sure to test the cleaning product on a small area first.

DIY Soft Scrub

½ cup castile soap

1½ cup baking soda

¼ – ½ cup water (use distilled water if your tap water is very hard)

2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar

Mix the castile soap and baking soda in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix ¼ cup water with the vinegar. Combine it with the baking soda mixture. Add more water to get the consistency you want. Store the thicker paste in a covered container.

* It’s generally not a great idea to mix vinegar and castile soap (acid/base). But in this case, the baking soda is also a base. It protects the soap from being neutralized by the vinegar.

DIY All-purpose Spray Recipe

Mix together in a spray bottle.

2 cups water (use distilled water if your tap water is very hard)

2 tablespoons castile soap

10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)

DIY Laundry Soap

An empty 1/2 gallon old detergent jug

1/2 cup liquid castile soap

1/2 cup baking soda

15 drops orange, lavender or jasmine essential oil (or any combination)

Pour castile soap, baking soda and favorite essential oil inside the jug. Using the essential oils is optional but it will leave you with good smelling laundry.

Fill the jug with hot water, this will help dissolve the baking soda, until you reach almost the top of the jug. Close it and shake it.

Use about 1/4-1/3 cup per load. Make sure you shake the jug slightly each time before using. Not too much though otherwise when you open the jug the mixture will burst out.

There you have it—natural, basic, easy-to-use cleaning products for your home. Enjoy the natural clean!

By: Cat Ebeling RN, MSN-PHN, co-author of the best-seller: The Diabetes Fix

Broccoli and broccoli sprouts are shining stars in the cruciferous vegetable family, and there are some very compelling reasons that this amazing vegetable actually has been scientifically proven to prevent and kill cancer cells, reduce tumors, and prevent their spread. Broccoli contains some very powerful bioactive phytochemicals (naturally occurring compounds) that fight cancer, arthritis, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and more. Broccoli has been shown in scientific studies to:

Protect cells from DNA damage

Detox the body

Kill cancer cells

Antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial action

Powerful anti-inflammatory

Inhibit cancer cell growth and spread

These actions are carried out through broccoli’s copious amounts of fiber, sulforaphane, glucoraphanin, phenolic compounds, Diindolylmethane (DIM), beta carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamins C, E, and K, folate, and minerals. Cruciferous vegetables contain health-promoting/disease-fighting substances known as glucosinolates, which are naturally-occuring sulfur-containing chemicals. These potent chemicals also explain why cruciferous vegetables have a uniquely pungent aroma and slightly bitter flavor.

Sulforaphane stands out as one most powerful cancer-fighting ingredients in broccoli by supporting proper DNA replication and function of your cells, helping them to reproduce healthy cells. (Cell mutations are often the beginnings of cancer.) Sulforaphane also encourages cell death in colon, bladder, prostate, breast, lung, brain, thyroid, tongue, and skin cancers; as well as oral, pharynx, esophageal, colon and kidney cancers. Sulforaphane is effective against most all cancers. In fact, just three servings a week of broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, or other cruciferous vegetables can reduce overall cancer risk by over 60%.

Sulforaphane also helps to reduce (by as much as 73%) dangerous free radicals which can also wreak havoc on various body systems and cells, which protects DNA and healthy cell replication. Sulforaphane—unlike toxic chemotherapy—can actually induce cancer cell death, without harming healthy cells. In fact, it strengthens healthy cell reproduction. Sulforaphane also enhances the ability of certain anti-cancer and chemotherapy medications such as cisplatin, gemcitabine, doxorubicin, 5-flourouracil, while limiting their toxic effects on normal, healthy cells. Sulforaphane also contains powerful anti-inflammatory compounds which not only fight cancer, but diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, allergies, and more.

Glucoraphanin is a type of glucosinolate, contained in all cruciferous vegetables. Glucosinolates are considered to be a part of the defense mechanism of the broccoli plant and also becomes a defense mechanism in our bodies, when we consume it. Glucoraphanin, in particular, is a glucosinolate precursor to sulforaphane that helps to block cancer cells from forming or multiplying. What’s more, broccoli sprouts contain up to twenty times more of this bioactive compound, and are a delicious addition to any salad, sandwich or smoothie.

Phenolic Compounds in broccoli stops damage from free radicals, and reduces inflammation–two things that are very difficult to avoid in our environment. These out-of-control free radicals along with inflammation, are the beginnings of many serious disease processes, including cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer’s and more. Phenolic compounds are also very effective against bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.

Diindolymethane or DIM for short, has multiple benefits in our bodies, including boosting the immune system, making it more effective at killing cancer cells, and helping to fight cancers—especially those that have to do with our sex hormones, such as prostate, breast and ovarian cancers. DIM is a metabolite of indole 3 carbinol. DIM helps to prevent excess estrogen from converting into another more dangerous form of estrogen, which is causative factor in breast cancer. Incidences of breast cancer, and other estrogen-related cancers are generally quite low in many Asian cultures that embrace diets high in cruciferous vegetables.

In a 2008 study published in Pharmaceutical Research, scientists found that low doses of DIM induced a protein that helps to kill cancer cells, and reduce new cancer cell growth in prostate cancer. In another study reported in the April 22, 2008 edition of Pharmaceutical Research, scientists found low doses of DIM induced production of a protein in prostate cancer cells which weakens and kills cancer cells and stops their spread.

For some, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables may taste bitter and not be very well liked. However, an excellent—and even more potent—alternative to broccoli, is broccoli sprouts. Three-day-old broccoli sprouts can contain up to 50 times the amount of cancer-preventing compounds as mature broccoli. Broccoli sprouts can easily be grown at home, and enjoyed raw. Their mild taste makes them easily compatible on a variety of foods, including salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and sprinkled as a garnish on eggs, soup, etc. Another delicious and more concentrated choice is ‘broccolini’, which is basically baby broccoli. It also has a more mild taste, and tender-crisp texture, making it perfect for light steaming (no more than 5 minutes), which boosts the sulforaphane content, and other phytochemicals in the broccoli.

One other method for maximizing the cancer-fighting potential in broccoli is to combine it with mustard seed, daikon radish, wasabi, arugula or cabbage—especially the red/purple type. The American Institute for Cancer Research reports that:

“participants [who] ate a broccoli supplement…and ate a second food with myrosinase, their blood and urine levels of sulforaphane were significantly higher than those who did not eat the food.”

Broccoli’s super healthy benefits extend far behind its cancer prevention, providing more than one reason to eat this (or its cruciferous relatives) most every day. Besides being a powerful cancer fighter, broccoli:

So yes, your mom was right when she told you to “Eat your broccoli!” Enjoy it often and protect your health! And don’t be afraid to slather on some grass-fed butter or cheese onto your broccoli too… the healthy fats in butter (or even grass-fed cheese) can help improve the absorption of many of the powerful nutrients in broccoli! Plus, it tastes WAY better with butter than just plain steamed broccoli!

But here’s where it gets really interesting. Broccoli is just one piece of the puzzle — and scientists are discovering that some of the most powerful tools for protecting your heart and slowing aging aren’t expensive procedures or exotic supplements. In fact, one of the most exciting discoveries in longevity research right now costs less than a dollar a day. And chances are, you’ve had it before.
