<p><em><strong>Water, water, everywhere!</strong></em></p>
<p>The water aisle at the grocery store has grown bigger and bigger. Now you have to <strong>make choices</strong> between natural spring water, volcanic water, sparkling mineral water, alkaline water, flavored water, ‘smart’ water, or just your basic reverse osmosis purified water. It’s mind boggling, really. Who would have thought it would be so hard to just get a healthy drink of water! Not to mention the prices—some of these bottles of water can cost a fortune! But, are they worth it?</p>
<p>Sure, there’s good ‘ole tap water, but depending on where you live, may not be all that healthy, (unless you have well water) and is <strong>often full of harmful chemicals</strong> like fluoride and chlorine, as well as toxic leftover medications, glyphosate, and potential pathogens. But what about bottled water?</p>
<p>Let’s take a more in-depth look at some of bottled water choices that appear on your grocery store shelves, so that next time you are faced with that wall of water choices, you will know just what to reach for.</p>
<h2><strong>Alkaline water</strong></h2>
<p><a href="https://thenutritionwatchdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Water_PH-e1627407404951.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-21966 size-full" src="https://thenutritionwatchdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Water_PH-e1627407404951.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="399" /></a></p>
<p>“Alkaline” water has to do with its pH level. The pH level tells you <strong>how acidic or alkaline something</strong> is from 0-14, with the lower numbers being more acidic and the higher numbers alkaline.</p>
<p>Alkaline water is thought to <strong>neutralize the body</strong>. The pH of the human body lies in a tight range between 7.35-7.45, and any minor alterations from this range can cause severe health issues.</p>
<p>It is considered that disease states begin when the <strong>human body becomes too acidic</strong>, so drinking alkaline water helps to push the body back into the alkaline range.</p>
<p>Whether alkaline water is good for you or not has to do with how it’s made. When water is naturally alkaline, it picks up minerals from coming in contact with rocks which makes it alkaline. So you get <strong>minerals and alkalinity, naturally.</strong></p>
<p>Alkaline water seems to be the big new ‘thing’. Alkaline water means that it’s pH is higher and more alkaline. Our body’s own pH generally falls around 7.4. It’s thought that diet and lifestyle factors can make our bodies more acidic, which then makes one more susceptible to disease. The selling factor of this water is if you drink alkaline water, your body will become less acidic and therefore healthier.</p>
<h3><strong>Natural vs Artificially Created Alkaline Water</strong></h3>
<p>Natural alkaline water comes from <strong>springs or wells where there is a lot of minerals</strong>. The minerals in the water are what make it more alkaline. This water can be quite healthy and contain magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium, making it not only thirst-quenching but full of electrolytes and minerals.</p>
<p>Artificially created alkaline water comes from a <strong>chemical process called electrolysis</strong>, which raises the pH in the water with an ionizer. When the acidic and alkaline water molecules are separated, the acidic water is removed and what remains is alkaline. Ionized alkaline water can have pH values as high as 9.5 or higher.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom line:</strong> Alkaline water is good for you, <strong>but don’t believe all the health claims</strong>&#8211;they are not scientifically proven. Natural alkaline water comes from minerals which is a healthier version to drink. Use caution with artificially-made alkaline water; it usually has less beneficial minerals in it, and may also contain contaminants, depending on the source and whether the water is purified prior to the alkalization process. Drinking too much artificial alkaline water can actually minerals out of the body and be detrimental to your health.</p>
<p><strong>Examples:</strong> Naturally alkaline water includes Icelandic Glacial Spring water and Rocky Mountain Spring water. Artificially ionized alkaline water includes Glaceau Alkaline Smartwater, Essentia ionized water, Talkingrain Essentials, and Alkaline 88.</p>
<h2><strong>Mineral Water</strong></h2>

<p>Mineral water naturally contains minerals and is often a type of natural spring water. When rainwater filters down deep through rocks, it not only is purified, but it picks up minerals which are good your health. Mineral water, which contains magnesium and calcium <strong>can help lower blood pressure, reduce heart disease, and benefit bone health</strong>.</p>
<p>There is a wide range of quality when it comes to mineral water, based on the source. Mineral water can also come from different types of rock like bedrock, or volcanic rock—and it makes a <strong>great difference</strong> in the quality, taste and purity of the water. Some mineral waters have a higher mineral content than others, depending on where they come from.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5318167/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mineral water is usually high in essential minerals</a>, including calcium, magnesium, and sodium. This makes mineral water an ideal source to replenish not only fluids, but vital electrolytes in the body. <em>The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)</em> states that to be classified as ‘mineral water’, it must have at least 250 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved solids from its source. This includes minerals and trace elements. It is<strong> not permissible to add minerals during bottling</strong>. Gerolsteiner, a well-known mineral water has over 2,500 ppm minerals including calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, potassium, sodium, chloride, and “other minerals”.</p>
<p>Some mineral water has natural carbonation which is fine, if you like the extra fizziness. Carbonation comes from the CO2 in the water. For many, it’s just a matter of personal taste. Sparkling mineral water can also have the carbonation added during bottling. Mineral waters like Perrier, Pellegrino or Gerolsteiner waters are naturally carbonated.</p>
<p>While sparkling water may be slightly more acidic due to the reaction of carbon dioxide and H2O, it is not enough to be significant. Carbon dioxide and water react to produce carbonic acid, a weak acid that’s known to stimulate a burning, prickly sensation that can be enjoyable to some people.</p>
<p><em>Note</em>, however, that drinking carbonated water does not actually make your body more acidic. It’s really just a matter of taste preference, “still or sparkling?” as waiters often ask.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom Line:</strong> Mineral water can <strong>one of the healthiest types of water</strong> to drink. It replaces essential minerals and electrolytes and is often alkaline as well. Always check the water source on the back of the label.</p>
<p><strong>Examples:</strong> Gerolsteiner, Topo Chico, Perrier, Pellegrino and Calistoga.</p>
<h2><strong>Spring Water</strong></h2>

<p>‘Spring’ water can be a fairly generic term and there is a huge amount of diversity for spring water, its purity and where it comes from. Spring water is water that is <strong>filtered through rocks and comes up to the surface</strong>.</p>
<p>Like mineral water, spring water also generally comes from an underground source and is usually bottled at the source. It contains minerals, electrolytes and other essential dissolved solids. Spring water comes to the surface, while artesian well water is similar to spring water, but it must be accessed underground by a well.</p>
<p>However, spring water requirements are not as tight as mineral water. While it can have minerals in it, it is not required to contain a certain amount. It’s only held to the <strong>same standards that apply to tap water</strong>, and there’s no official recognition needed to label your water “spring water”, nor does its composition need to be consistent every time. So that makes spring water ‘iffy’ as far as purity, toxins, dissolved minerals, etc.</p>
<p>Artesian well water is another type of similar water classification by the <em>Food and Drug Administration</em>. Underground water that doesn’t rise to the surface is considered artesian well water. It’s also fancy name for your basic well water that many households have. Again, a wide variation of the content of the water as far as minerals and dissolved solids go—and potential toxins in the water. It all depends on the source of the water.</p>
<p>A good, deep well that has a water source that has been filtered through layers of hard rock will be full of minerals and quite pure. So even well water at your home can have the potential of being as good or better than what you pay top dollar for in a store.</p>
<p><em><strong>Author’s note:</strong> I live up in the Rocky Mountains near a small town in Colorado. We just recently had a well put in that is over 300ft. deep through solid granite and quartz. It is pure, delicious and full of healthy minerals from the rock and quartz.</em></p>
<p><strong>Bottom Line:</strong> Because spring water and artesian well water can contain varying levels of minerals and electrolytes, this type of water can be good for your health and quench your thirst. Again, check the source and whether the water has been tested for any toxins.</p>
<p><strong>Examples:</strong> Icelandic Glacial Spring Water, Mountain Valley, Evian, Acqua Panna, Ice Mountain, Rocky Mountain Spring Water, Poland Spring, JUST Water. Artesian water examples include Voss, Fiji, Whistler Glacial, Kopu, and Hawaiian Springs.</p>
<h2><strong>Purified Drinking Water</strong></h2>

<p>Purified drinking water can <strong>come from a variety of water sources</strong>; it is just purified through a process called <strong>‘reverse osmosis</strong>’. Purified water can even be your basic tap water run through the RO process.</p>
<p>Reverse Osmosis works by using a high pressure pump to force the water across the semi-permeable RO membrane, removing approximately 95-99% of the dissolved salts, particles, colloids, organics, bacteria and other pathogens. It’s important to note, however that an RO system should <strong>not be relied upon to remove 100%</strong> of bacteria or viruses—especially since viruses are very small.</p>
<p>RO removes magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium as well, so unless those important electrolytes and minerals are added back in during the bottling process, drinking RO water on a regular basis can actually leach a small amount of minerals from the body. RO water is also slightly acidic. Prolonged consumption of reverse osmosis water <strong>can have adverse health effects</strong> such as increasing the risk of kidney disorders and gastrointestinal troubles.</p>
<p>Many bottled water companies using RO method will re-mineralize the water, adding back in magnesium, potassium, and salt.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom Line:</strong> Bottled purified water is fine to drink, especially if it has added minerals and electrolytes, but keep in mind, it’s usually nothing fancy and can come from just your basic municipal tap water source.</p>
<p><strong>Examples:</strong> Dasani, Aquafina, and Nestle Pure Life, Poland Spring water.</p>
<h2><strong>Distilled Water</strong></h2>
<p><a href="https://thenutritionwatchdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Water_Distilled-e1627407443624.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-21962 size-full" src="https://thenutritionwatchdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Water_Distilled-e1627407443624.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>Distilled water is <strong>one of the purest forms</strong> of water. Water is boiled and turned into a steam then converted into water again. Once the water converts from a liquid into a gas, the heavier minerals and other solids are left behind. The water particles are condensed back into a pure, clean liquid state with nothing else in it.</p>
<p>Because there is nothing else in it, distilled water has a very flat taste and <strong>does not provide you with any healthy minerals or electrolytes</strong>. Distilled water is very pure, but since it does not contain minerals, it can actually pull small amounts from your body like your bones and teeth, if you drink it frequently. However, if you are eating a healthy diet, full of vitamins and minerals, drinking distilled water won’t really affect your health negatively.</p>
<p>Keep in mind, distilled water will have a tendency to <strong>leach chemicals or minerals from any container it is in</strong>, so if you are drinking distilled water from a plastic jug, it’s highly likely it has absorbed some of the chemicals from the plastic container.</p>
<p>Some bottled water companies distill their water and then replenish the minerals and electrolytes during the bottling process.</p>
<p>Depending on the tap water where you live, however, distilled water could be better for you than tap water which may contain chemicals, lead, mercury, pesticides and even tiny pathogens.</p>
<p>Distilled water works well for things like steam irons, your car’s cooling system, your fish tank, and certain medical devices like CPAP machines that can get clogged up with minerals from tap water and other types of water.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom Line:</strong> Distilled water is <strong>not a great choice of water to drink</strong>, but may be better than some tap waters which can include contaminants like fluoride, chlorine and may contain other chemicals and toxic substances. Some distilled drinking water has some of the minerals and electrolytes put back in, making it healthier to drink than plain distilled water.</p>
<p><strong>Examples:</strong> Glaceau Purfied Smartwater, Arrowhead Distilled Water, Nestle Distilled Water, Arrowhead Springs Distilled Water, Eldorado Distilled Water, Poland Springs, Ozarka</p>
<p>That’s a summary of the most popular water types. New ones come out every day—like probiotic water, antioxidant water, protein water, caffeinated water, and flavored waters. All of these may come from a variety of sources and purifying methods.</p>
<p>As in everything else that you put in your body—<strong>read the label and find out how your water is processed</strong>. It’s important to always check the source of your bottled water as well.</p>
<p>Consider too, the <strong>type of container</strong> it comes in. Since water is actually a solvent, water from plastic water bottles is probably leaching some of those not so healthy chemicals from the plastic—chemicals which can be xenoestrogens and disrupt your endocrine system. Choose glass if you can and if it’s practical.</p>
<p>And remember, it’s not necessary to pay top dollar for H20. Just because it comes from a fancy, far-away source, doesn’t make it better. Your tap water that comes out of your well may be just as good.</p>

<p>I remember years ago that my Dad had this jar of gin-soaked raisins on his counter and he said that he read somewhere that it helped alleviate joint pain, and other health benefits.  I was skeptical at the time, but hey, they actually tasted pretty good, so I would always eat a few every time I visited my Dad.</p>
<p>I even recently tried my own version of this concoction and made whiskey-soaked raisins too&#8230;they were quite tasty, and I enjoyed my daily ration 🙂</p>
<p>Well, my friends at <a href="https://www.thealternativedaily.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TheAlternativeDaily</a> wrote a good article about this topic and I wanted to share it today&#8230;</p>
<p>More than 50 million American adults and around 300,000 children<strong> suffer from joint pain brought on by arthritis</strong>. Arthritis occurs in people of all ages and sexes, but it the <strong>most prevalent in women</strong>. It is the leading cause of disability in the United States with numbers steadily increasing. According to the <a href="http://www.arthritis.org/about-arthritis/understanding-arthritis/what-is-arthritis.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Arthritis Foundation of Atlanta</em></a>, there are over one <strong>hundred different types</strong> of arthritis. Degenerative arthritis is the most common, followed closely by inflammatory arthritis.</p>
<p>One of the most painful and least understood forms of arthritis is <strong>inflammatory arthritis</strong>, which is actually <strong>not related to aging</strong>. Rather, it is an <strong>autoimmune disease</strong>. In people with autoimmune diseases, the body mistakenly attacks itself. Usually, those who suffer from one autoimmune disease will develop more throughout the course of their lives. For instance, a person with Hashimoto’s (a thyroid autoimmune disease) may very well develop a number of other autoimmune diseases, like arthritis.</p>

<p>With inflammatory arthritis, pain and inflammation come and go — sometimes without warning. This makes it hard to perform even the simplest of daily tasks. In some cases, joints may become <strong>permanently deformed</strong>. Conventional treatment usually involves a combination of patient education, rest, exercise, joint protection and medications — many with uncomfortable side effects. The <strong>earlier the condition is diagnosed</strong>, the more effectively people seem to respond to treatment.</p>
<p>Like any chronic condition, those in pain may search tirelessly for anything to improve their quality of life. This includes an assertive push towards <strong>alternative, and even folk remedies</strong>. Seeking out alternative remedies for arthritis seems worthwhile, since pharmaceutical treatments often do not serve the patient well, especially in the long term.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0140673687916722" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> that examined arthritis patients following 20 years of conventional treatment found that 35 percent had died, and 19 percent were severely disabled. The study found that function improved over the early years of treatment, but a considerable decline was seen between the 10 and 20 year mark. <strong>Medication never induced remission</strong> of the disease. <p>Those that drank heavily showed the fastest advancement. Study leaders noted that these findings were in line with past research, which demonstrated that <strong>moderate drinking did lower the risk</strong> of developing rheumatoid arthritis. This also confirms the general idea that lifestyle factors and nutrition definitely affect the onset and development of arthritis.</p>
<p>Gin is flavored with <a href="https://healthyeating.sfgate.com/nutrients-juniper-berries-2549.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">juniper berries,</a> which are rich in vitamin C, catechins, alpha-terpineol, alpha-pinene, betulin caryophyllene, limonene, menthol, rutin and delta-3-carene. These are all <strong>anti-inflammatory compounds</strong>.</p>
<p>Juniper berries have a <strong>long history of medicinal use</strong> dating back to the Greeks and Romans, who appeared to use them for medicine prior to food. Research shows that juniper berries contain potent antioxidants as well as antibacterial properties. <p>Almost exactly one year ago, it showed up like a tsunami…and <strong>a wave of disease, death, and destruction swept over all of us</strong>. According to <a href="https://www.statista.com/page/covid-19-coronavirus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Statista</a>, as of February 19, 2021, confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 disease surpassed 28 million in America, with over 505 thousand deaths reported.</p>

<p>There is not one corner of the globe that this <strong>pandemic’s immensity and darkness</strong> have not impacted. It might be hard to imagine any good news coming out of such a real-life horror story – but, there is a glimmer of hope and light.</p>
<p>As life seemed to be spinning out of control, something was happening backstage. The best and brightest researchers in the world were pouring everything they knew into developing a vaccine that would protect us from the enemy novel virus. <strong>Now, it is here!</strong></p>
<p>However, as with anything new – especially vaccines – there are <strong>always lots of questions and plenty of considerations</strong>. Today, February 19, 2021 – this is what we know about the available vaccines in America.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><strong>About COVID-19 vaccines</strong></h2>
<p>As of February 19th, there have been over <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/covid-19-vaccine-doses.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">57 million COVID-19</a> vaccinations administered in the United States. The basic premise behind COVID vaccinations is to teach your body how to recognize and fight off the virus.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations.html#:~:text=CDC%20recommends%20that%20initial%20supplies,long%2Dterm%20care%20facility%20residents." target="_blank" rel="noopener">CDC is recommending</a> that the following groups of people be offered the vaccine first.</p>
<ul>
<li>Health care personnel</li>
<li>Adult residents of long-term care facilities</li>
<li>Essential persons like first responders and teachers</li>
<li>People 75 years of age or older</li>
<li>People ages 65-74</li>
<li>People ages 16-64 who have underlying medical conditions</li>
<li>Other essential persons who work in industries such as foodservice and construction</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Note:</strong> <em>Keep in mind that guidelines may vary by state.</em></p>
<p><strong>There are presently two vaccines that are authorized for use in America:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/144414/download" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine</strong></a> – With an <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2034577" target="_blank" rel="noopener">efficacy rate of 95%</a>, this vaccine is suitable for persons 16 years or older. Recipients receive two injections 21 days apart.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/144638/download" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine</strong></a> – With an <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2035389" target="_blank" rel="noopener">efficacy rate of 94.1%</a>, this vaccine is suitable for 18 years or older persons. Recipients received two injections 28 days apart.</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><strong>Both vaccines use messenger RNA technology</strong></h2>
<p>Both of the above vaccines use messenger RNA ( mRNA). These vaccines<strong> do not use the live virus</strong> that causes COVID-19. Contrary to what you may have heard about these vaccines, mRNA does not enter the cells’ nucleus, which means <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/facts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it can’t alter DNA</a>. Cells receive instruction on how to make a harmless protein unique to the virus. Once copies of the protein are made, the genetic material from the vaccine is destroyed. In response to the protein, the body makes T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes that fight off the COVID-19 virus if an infection happens.</p>
<p>According to Dr. Joshua Levitt, there are two pieces of welcome news about mRNA vaccines:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Adjuvants:</strong> Chemical adjuvants are ingredients that are added to traditional vaccines to stimulate a stronger immune response. Because mRNA vaccines work differently than traditional vaccines, they do not require the same adjuvants, so the ingredient list is actually “cleaner” than many traditional vaccines.</li>
<li><strong>Preservatives:</strong> mRNA is an unstable molecule that requires extremely cold temperatures to maintain its integrity. Those cold temperatures reduce the need for extra preservatives which are required in traditional vaccines.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>According to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/safety/allergic-reaction.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Centers for Disease Control ( CDC)</a>, persons with the following should not be vaccinated an mRNA vaccine</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>If you have had a <strong>serious allergic reaction or immediate reaction to any vaccine ingredient,</strong> you should not get the vaccine. This includes a reaction to polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polysorbate. Although polysorbate is not in either of the vaccines mentioned above, it is closely related to PEG, which is in the vaccines.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>If you have a <strong>severe allergic reaction or an immediate allergic reaction after the first dose</strong>, you should not get another injection even if the reaction was not severe. Examples of an immediate reaction include hives, swelling, or wheezing occurring within four hours of vaccination.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Note:</strong> <em>If you have had a severe allergic reaction to injectables in the past, you can still get the vaccine, but you need to be monitored for 30 minutes after getting the vaccine.</em></p>
<h3><strong>What if I have an underlying condition?</strong></h3>
<p>If you have an underlying medical condition, the CDC states that you can get the vaccine as long as you have not had a reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine or any of its ingredients. There is, however, very little information about the safety of the vaccine in people who have autoimmune disorders or a weakened immune system.</p>
<h3><strong>What if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?</strong></h3>
<p>Because there is no data on the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant or breastfeeding women, it is best to speak with your healthcare provider before considering the vaccine.</p>
<h3><strong>Those that have already had COVID-19</strong></h3>
<p>If you have already had COVID-19, a vaccine may help prevent re-infection in the future. Because it is unknown how long immunity after getting COVID-19 lasts, the CDC is recommending vaccination 90 days after an initial diagnosis.</p>
<h3><strong>Possible reactions to COVID-19 vaccines</strong></h3>
<p>The <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/coronavirus-vaccine/art-20484859" target="_blank" rel="noopener">following reactions</a> are possible after the first or second vaccine injection.</p>
<ul>
<li>Swelling, pain, or redness at the injection site</li>
<li>Fatigue</li>
<li>Fever (remember, this is a sign that your immune system is working)</li>
<li>Headache</li>
<li>Muscle pain</li>
<li>Joint pain</li>
<li>Chills</li>
<li>Swollen lymph nodes</li>
<li>General unwell feeling</li>
<li>Nausea and vomiting</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>* An important note for women:</strong> It is common for axillary (armpit) lymph nodes to become enlarged on the side where the COVID vaccine was administered. The enlargement can persist for several weeks after the vaccine. Because axillary lymph node enlargement can also occur in breast cancer, this otherwise minor side effect can strike fear in many women after the vaccine. As a result, many experts are now recommending that women avoid unnecessary testing and delay mammograms and for one month after getting a COVID vaccine to allow time for enlarged lymph nodes to subside.</p>
<p>It is important to note that getting the COVID-19 vaccine<strong> may cause</strong> some side effects similar to symptoms of the virus. If you have been exposed to COVID-19 and you develop symptoms more than three days after being vaccinated – or if your symptoms persist for two or more days – quarantine and get tested.</p>
<h3><strong>What about long term side effects?</strong></h3>
<p>Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines trials started in the summer of 2020. Because of this, it is impossible to know what long-term side effects, if any, may occur. To stay current with all of the safety data surrounding vaccines, you can visit the <a href="https://vaers.hhs.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System</a>. This site provides data available to the public.</p>

<h3><strong>Do I need to prepare for a COVID-19 vaccine?</strong></h3>
<p>There is a lot of information circling out there about what to do before a COVID-19 vaccination – it is imperative to sort through what is credible and just talk. Are you wondering about how best to prepare for a COVID-19 vaccination? Here is what the experts are saying.</p>
<ul>
<li>According to Aaron E. Glatt, MD and hospital epidemiologist and chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, NY, <strong><em>there is nothing specific a person needs to do before taking the vaccine apart from reporting any previous serious allergic reactions</em></strong>.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Blanka Kaplan, MD, is a specialist in adult and pediatric allergy and immunology at Northwell Health in Great Neck, NY. According to Kaplan,<strong><em> if you take allergy medicine, you should not stop taking it before being vaccinated.</em></strong></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Kaplan also <strong><em>advises against taking any kind of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or aspirin before and 2 hours after vaccination</em></strong> – unless instructed otherwise by your physician. These may cause an allergic reaction in some people.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Kaplan’s additional advice includes <strong><em>avoiding alcohol 24 hours after vaccination and avoiding strenuous exercise 2 hours before and 2 hours after vaccination.</em></strong> Also, skip the hot shower 2 hours before and 2 hours after vaccination as it can cause allergic reactions in some people.</li>
</ul>

<h3><strong>What you should do to support a healthy immune system</strong></h3>
<p>According to the experts, there are a few things that you can do to <strong>support your immune system doing its job</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Stay hydrated</strong> – The first one is to stay well-hydrated. <strong>Hydration is fundamental to keeping your immune system healthy</strong>. It is recommended to drink a minimum of half their body weight in ounces of water. If you are a coffee drinker, drink one cup of water extra for every cup of coffee you drink. Choose purified water and herbal tea.</p>
<p><strong>Eat right</strong> – Eating a whole food diet is a great way to stay healthy and keep your immune system in top shape. Skip the sugar-laden drinks, refined vegetable oil snacks, and munch on some carrots and hummus instead. <strong>The more colorful your diet, the better – include delicious fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and healthy fat</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Sleep well</strong> – For your immune system to do what it needs to do, you need to <strong>adopt a healthy sleeping routine.</strong> Studies show that people who do not get enough sleep are more likely to get sick when exposed to a common cold virus. Additionally, a lack of sleep can also impact how fast you recover if you do get sick. Try to go to bed early and get at least 7-9 hours of quality sleep. Put away the electronics an hour before bed and sleep in a dark and cool room.</p>
<p><strong>Stay active</strong> – Regular exercise is vital to overall health and wellbeing and a robust immune system. <strong>Exercise helps increase circulation</strong>, allowing cells and substances of the immune system to circulate through the body and do their job.</p>
<p><strong>Manage stress</strong> – Being in a constant state of stress can take its toll on your mental and physical health and impede proper immune function. Although small bouts of stress may induce immune function, chronic stress does the opposite by increasing inflammation and lowering lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that help keep infection at bay. If you battle with chronic stress, try to <strong>adopt some health stress-beating habits like journaling, exercising, deep breathing, yoga, and spending time in nature.</strong></p>

<h2><strong>What the future holds</strong></h2>
<p>As more vaccines are approved, and data flows in from the current vaccines being administered, new information will follow. Just as COVID-19 is unique, so are the approaches underway to protect us against the virus. <strong>Continue to practice good hygiene, social distancing, and wear a mask in public</strong>. <p>There is a<strong> silent and serious disease</strong> slowly taking over a large portion of our population. <strong>Fatty liver disease</strong> is becoming increasingly common in many parts of the world—<strong>especially the United States</strong>. It affects 1 out of five people globally, and is a <em>major risk factor for liver failure, as well as diabetes, heart attacks, and even cancer</em>. In the United States it is the <strong>most common liver disease</strong> there is.</p>
<p>This disease is called <strong>NALFD</strong> (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) or <strong>fatty liver</strong>. It has definite links to fructose, vegetable seed oils and our overall nutrition. What is this disease?</p>
<p>The main characteristic of this disease is an <strong>overload of fat</strong> stored in the liver. So much so that the liver cannot function properly. The liver is considered “fatty” when more than 5% of it is fat. Non-alcoholic fatty liver is the initial stage of this liver disease—and at this point—<em><strong>is still reversible</strong></em>.</p>
<p>The biggest problem with this disease is that it often <strong>has no symptoms</strong>, so it goes undiagnosed. Over time, NAFL can become NASH, or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. At this point, the inflammation and fat begin to damage the liver cells, leading to scarring of the liver and cirrhosis. By the time the disease advances to NASH, the liver is no longer functioning very well. <strong>NASH can be life-threatening</strong> and can be the beginnings of liver cancer, an aggressive and difficult-to-treat form of cancer.</p>

<p>The liver is one of the primary organs in our bodies, and one we cannot live without. <em>It is responsible for</em>:</p>
<ul style="padding-left: 30px;">
<li><strong>Production of bile, carries away waste and breaks down fats</strong></li>
<li>Production of proteins for blood plasma</li>
<li>Production of cholesterol and special proteins that carry fats</li>
<li><strong>Conversion of glucose into glycogen for storage</strong></li>
<li>Processing of hemoglobin for iron</li>
<li>Conversion of ammonia to urea to be carried out of the body</li>
<li><strong>Metabolizing drugs and ridding the body of toxins</strong></li>
<li>Regulating blood clotting</li>
<li>Creating immune factors to fight infections</li>
<li><strong>Clearance of byproducts of red blood cells.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>When the liver gets overloaded with sugar or starches, it turns starts making fat like crazy. This is the body’s normal response to excess glucose. However, fructose—especially when it comes in the form of<strong> high fructose corn syrup</strong>, is a trigger to put the liver into overdrive and really turn on the fat production. Because high fructose corn syrup has found its way into virtually all processed foods and drinks, it is the primary cause of fatty liver syndrome—as well as numerous other<strong> serious health issues.</strong></p>
<p>Having fatty liver disease comes with a cascade of health issues. First of all, high blood sugar, high levels of inflammation and insulin resistance point you towards<strong> diabetes and obesity</strong>. <h2><strong>Choline Deficiency and NAFLD</strong></h2>
<p>Research now shows that choline deficiency, a key nutrient found in egg yolks and beef liver, is one of the key risk factors that <strong>trigger fatty liver disease</strong>, along with fructose. According to Chris Masterjohn, who holds a PhD. in nutrition science, choline deficiency actually appears to be an even more significant trigger for fatty liver disease than fructose, and in his view, the rise in this liver condition is largely the <strong>result of avoiding liver and <a href="https://www.truthaboutabs.com/whole-eggs-or-egg-whites.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">egg yolks.</a></strong> Says Dr. Masterjohn:</p>
<p><em>               “More specifically, I currently believe that dietary fat, whether saturated or unsaturated, and anything that the liver likes to turn into fat, like fructose, [sucrose] and ethanol, will <strong>promote the accumulation of fat as long as we don’t get enough choline</strong>,” Masterjohn says adding:</em></p>
<p><em>               “Once that fat accumulates, the critical factor igniting an inflammatory fire to this fat is the consumption of too much PUFA (polyunsaturated fat from vegetable … oils).”</em></p>
<p>When you combine a<strong> low choline diet with excessive fructose and starches</strong>, you are almost guaranteed to develop fatty liver disease at some point.</p>
<h2><strong>What is Choline?</strong></h2>

<p>Choline is a nutrient found in egg yolks, beef liver, legumes, nuts, beef, leafy greens. Choline is an <strong>essential component</strong> of our cell membranes and is required for the synthesis of phospholipids. Choline helps our bodies create the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is important for memory, <em>mood, muscle control, and other brain and nervous system functions.</em></p>
<p>Choline also works with the metabolism of B vitamins as well. Choline is essential to make phosphatidylcholine which is important to the structure and integrity of our body’s cell walls. Many people are low in choline due to dietary restrictions (egg yolks, liver) and people who are vegetarians and vegans.</p>
<h3><strong>Menopausal Women and Choline Deficiency</strong></h3>
<p>Younger women need less choline from their diet than children or other adults because the female hormone estrogen helps the body make choline. After menopause, estrogen levels decline, making it necessary to get choline from the diet. This makes menopausal and postmenopausal women at a much<strong> higher risk for fatty liver disease</strong>, particularly when they have a poor diet high in sugars and starch.</p>
<h3><strong>Choline and B Vitamins</strong></h3>

<p>Post-menopausal women and people with these common gene variations are at<strong> high risk for choline deficiency</strong>, making them at an even <strong>higher risk for fatty liver disease</strong>. AND when you combine these factors with a common gene variations, a poor diet&#8211;high in processed foods, high fructose corn syrup and processed grains, the chances of fatty liver disease are extremely high.</p>

<p>Back when I was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, there was a new so-called<strong> ‘health’ breakthrough</strong> that dictated that <strong>“saturated fats”</strong> should be crossed off the list of foods we should eat. Steaks and hamburgers were bad news, and in order to fight heart disease we were told to avoid all animal fats, or “saturated fats” and only use <strong><em>vegetable oils</em> </strong>like Crisco, soybean oil, canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and cottonseed oils.</p>
<p>Everyone started using margarine, made from partially hydrogenated seed oils, and vegetable oil for cooking, frying, baking, etc. And there was <strong>Crisco—a baking wonder!</strong> I even remember doctors telling patients who had had heart attacks to avoid all saturated fats, red meat, eggs and butter; and eat only chicken and fish, vegetable oils and margarine. Foods and cooking oils that were vegetable-based were advertised as <strong>‘heart-healthy’</strong>. Including Crisco.</p>
<p>But now, everything has changed. Many health experts are now discovering that vegetable oils are <strong>significantly worse for us</strong> than sugar and grains. Vegetable seed oils are considered to be one of the <strong>primary root causes</strong> of many inflammatory degenerative diseases including <em>heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and even cancer.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;I wonder how many people who followed the mistaken advice of eating vegetable seed died too early. This dietary change has <strong>likely killed millions of people prematurely</strong> and still continues to do so because most people just don&#8217;t understand this concept, or blindly buy into the mainstream medical paradigm.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>However, there exists a <strong>huge disconnect between</strong> what nutrition science has found and what official dietary guidelines tell us we should be doing. The nutrition scientists say that vegetable oils, which are a type of omega 6 fatty acids, are <strong>extremely toxic</strong> because they are connected to many chronic diseases. Meanwhile, the government and the FDA tell us to consumption of these oils are healthy.</p>
<p>Many people&#8211;including many health experts&#8211;believe that omega 6 fats are considered an ‘essential fat’ and necessary in our diets. The fact is, omega 6 fats, which are polyunsaturated fatty acids—or PUFA’s, are made up primarily of linoleic acid, which is actually <strong>very harmful to our health.</strong></p>
<p>Now stay with me here—although it’s a bit involved, the following information is something I <strong>highly recommend you read all the way through</strong>. Your life and your health are at stake and it’s important to understand this information on vegetable seed oils.</p>
<p>Omega 6 fats have increased in the human diet from only about 2-3 grams a day, a 150 years ago, <strong>to over 30-40 grams a day</strong> in current times. Omega 6 fats now make up almost <strong>20% of our diets</strong>.</p>
<p>This huge increase in omega 6 fats, combined with the toxic end products from these fats, cause damage that many scientists now believe to be one of the <strong>primary causes</strong> behind the massive increase in chronic disease including <em>obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.</em></p>
<p>By simply lowering your omega 6 intake to what your great-great grandparents used to eat, you may be able to <strong>essentially eliminate most chronic disease that are now prematurely killing us.</strong></p>
<p>We used to mistakenly believe that it was the<strong> ratio of omega 6 fats to omega 3 fats</strong> (the anti-inflammatory fats found in fish and grass fed meats) that was healthy or unhealthy. It was thought that you could just eat more omega 3 fats to ‘balance’ out the omega 6 fats, but we are now coming to the realization, through scientific research, that it is the <strong>total consumption of omega 6 fats—regardless of the ratio—that damages our health.</strong></p>
<p>Much has been discussed about sugar and processed grains being incredibly harmful, but little is actually known about the <strong>dangers of processed omega 6 fatty acids in vegetable oils</strong>.</p>
<p>Vegetable oils are considered a processed, industrialized seed oil. Vegetable oils are a fairly new addition to our diets, replacing the traditional fats that have been used for hundreds of years such as ghee, butter, olive oil, coconut oil and lard.</p>

<h2><strong>How are Industrial Seed Oils Made?</strong></h2>

<p>While these vegetable oils are labeled as ‘natural,’ <strong>they are most definitely not natural</strong>. I invite you to Google the making of industrial seed oils and watch the process for yourself. It’s not an appetizing operation.</p>
<p>Soy, corn, cotton, safflower and rapeseed (for canola oil) plants are grown (mostly GMO and heavily sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals) for vegetable oil. Once the plants are mature, the seeds are harvested from the plants. Next the seeds are <strong>heated to extremely high temperatures</strong>, oxidizing the unsaturated fatty acids, and creating <strong>harmful byproducts.</strong> Then the seeds are processed with a petroleum-based chemical solvent such as hexane, which maximizes the oil that can be extracted from the seeds.</p>
<p>More<strong> industrial chemicals are added</strong> to deodorize the terrible smell that this chemically extracted oil contains. The deodorizing process yields trans fats (yes, the ones that can kill you). Lastly, the oil has even more chemicals added to it to improve the color. All of this very UN-natural processing creates a high calorie, nutrient-poor, inflammatory GMO oil with leftover pesticides, chemical residue, trans fats and oxidized byproducts.</p>
<p>Because the fatty acids in industrial seed oils are so unstable, <strong>synthetic antioxidants are added to help prevent oxidation and rancidity</strong>. However, these synthetic antioxidants are not healthy either. <a href="https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/content/profiles/butylatedhydroxyanisole.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Synthetic antioxidants</a> such as <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4462476/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BHA</a>, <a href="https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007%2F978-1-4615-9561-8_15" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BHT</a>, and <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25484350/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TBHQ</a> have endocrine-disrupting, carcinogenic, and immune-disrupting effects. And additionally, TBHQ has been found to trigger an IgE (immunoglobulin E) <a href="https://www.jimmunol.org/content/192/1_Supplement/119.30.short" target="_blank" rel="noopener">response to some foods</a>, which may promote the development of food allergies.</p>

<h2><strong>The History of Vegetable Oil</strong></h2>

<p>Before the turn of the century, two soap makers named William Procter and James Gamble, created a new type of soap from cottonseed oil, which at the time, was considered a <strong>toxic waste product</strong> that no one wanted. Previous to this, soap was usually made from lard or beef tallow. The breakthrough came when it was discovered that when cottonseed oil was chemically altered and hydrogenated, <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/04/how-vegetable-oils-replaced-animal-fats-in-the-american-diet/256155/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it became a solid fat that resembled lard (a.k.a. Crisco)</a>. A new market for vegetable ‘lard’ was created.</p>
<p>Soybeans became a popular crop in the United States in the 30’s, and soon much of it was made into soybean oil. Canola, corn and safflower oil came soon after. These <strong>cooking oils</strong> were very popular due to an excellent marketing and advertising campaign.</p>
<p>In the 1940’s, the newly formed <em>America Heart Association</em> received a large donation from Procter &amp; Gamble and then endorsed vegetable oils as a healthier alternative to animal fats. The icing on the cake, however, was when scientist Ancel Keys presented his <strong>flawed “lipid hypothesis”</strong>, suggesting a link between animal fat, cholesterol and heart disease. Keys of course, pushed vegetable oils as the preferable choice to use, and the medical society and the public soon followed.</p>
<p>As we now know, <strong>Keys’ hypothesis was flawed</strong>, he cherry-picked the studies he wanted to use, and his ties to the sugar industry helped to further exaggerate his claims against saturated fat. Soon the entire industrialized world was using vegetable oils and demonizing animal fats.</p>

<h2><strong>How Are Different Types of Fats Classified?</strong></h2>

<p>For the purposes of this discussion, we will be talking primarily about omega 6 fats, linoleic acid, and PUFA’s. All of these are components found in industrial seed vegetable oils.</p>
<p>Other healthier choices of oils include monounsaturated fats like <strong>olive oil and saturated fats such as lard, butter and coconut oil</strong>. <p>Discussing fats can get somewhat complicated, but generally fats are divided up into these three groups:</p>
<p>• <strong>Saturated fats</strong>&#8212; have a <strong>full complement of hydrogen atoms</strong>. Examples of these types of fats include coconut oil and animal fats like butter, beef tallow and lard.<br />
• <strong>Monounsaturated fats</strong>—are <strong>missing a single hydrogen atom</strong>. Examples include olive oil, avocado oil and nuts.<br />
• <strong>Polyunsaturated fats or PUFA’s</strong>&#8211;are<strong> missing multiple hydrogen atoms</strong>. Examples include vegetable oils like canola, soybean, corn, sunflower, cottonseed, safflower, etc.</p>
<p>These missing hydrogen atoms make PUFAs much more likely to oxidize, and the fat breaks down into harmful metabolites. Omega 6 vegetable oils contain a large portion of linoleic acid. OXLAMS (oxidized linoleic acid metabolites) have a profoundly <strong>negative impact on human health.</strong> When you hear of oxidization in your blood vessels or plaque buildup that causes heart attacks, OXLAMS are often a contributing cause.</p>
<p><em>Note: Do not confuse <strong>linoleic acid (LA) with</strong> <a href="https://www.mercola.com/beef/cla.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)</strong></a>. CLA is found mostly in grass fed beef, while linoleic acid is found in vegetable seed oils. Many people think CLA and LA are interchangeable, but they are definitely not. CLA has many potent health benefits and will not cause any of the problems that LA does.</em></p>
<p>The truth is that the <strong>TOTAL amount of omega 6 you eat is detrimental to your health</strong> and as long as you eat fish a 2-3 times a week, you will get plenty of omega-3. So, you mostly want to pay attention to your omega 6/PUFA/linoleic acid intake.</p>
<p>Paul Saladino, author of <em>“The Carnivore Code”</em>, also discusses a lot of research that shows that it&#8217;s the ratio of <strong>saturated fat to omega 6’s</strong> that he thinks is actually <strong>MORE</strong> important than the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio, with higher saturated fat being protective, and higher polyunsaturated omega 6 fats causing the majority of health problems.</p>

<h2><strong>Why are seed oils so bad for us?</strong></h2>

<p>First and foremost, <strong>highly processed industrial seed oils</strong> are something our bodies do not recognize. As Chris Kresser states, industrial seed oils are an “evolutionary mismatch.” Up until the 1900’s humans never consumed industrial seed oil. However, beginning in the 70’s, the average consumption of just soybean oil went from <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21367944/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">4 pounds per person a year to 26 pounds per person!</a> As a result, these high levels of industrial seed oil consumption are ruining our health.</p>
<p>The primary reason seed oils are so detrimental, however is that they contain<strong> large amounts of linoleic acid.</strong> When we talk about omega 6 fats, we are referring primarily to the linoleic acid, or LA in those fats. LA makes up about 60% to 80% of omega 6 and is the primary ingredient that appears to spark the disease process.</p>

<h2><strong>Seed Oils, Covid-19 and ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome)</strong></h2>

<p>Seed oils are suspected to play a role in the development of <strong>ARDS</strong>, especially in Covid-19. One of the primary causes of death in Covid-19 is the development of acute respiratory distress, often brought on by an overreaction of cytokines, an inflammatory immune reaction of the body.</p>
<p>One of the key toxins that contributes to the development of symptoms of ARDS is called leukotoxin, and leukotoxin is made from linoleic acid by the white blood cells to kill off pathogens. However, leukotoxin is toxic to humans as well as pathogens. <strong>Leukotoxin is toxic enough to kill animals in minutes</strong> if you inject high amounts of it.</p>
<p>ARDS can brought on by many different pathogens, including viruses like influenza or pneumonia. You can also get ARDS from smoke inhalation or other toxic substances in the atmosphere as well.</p>
<p>Doctors started noticing that patients being fed liquid diets in the hospital (which are high in seed oils such as soybean oil) were developing ARDS. While the fatality rate from ARDS is generally 30% to 60%, according to one researcher, Tucker Goodrich, feeding seed oil-based liquid diets increases the rate of ARDS in patients 700%.</p>

<h2><strong>Seed Oils and Cancer</strong></h2>

<p>Each of the cells in our body contain a <strong>tiny powerhouse that generates energy, called the “mitochondria”</strong>. On this cellular level, excess linoleic acid consumption impedes the body’s ability to generate energy in our mitochondria. But, energy is necessary for most all body processes.</p>
<p>Depending on the body part, the cell’s mitochondria work best with specific types of fatty acids. These fatty acids can include LA, palmitic acid (another type of fat) or the fatty acid components from fish oil, such as DHA and EPA.</p>
<p>The appropriate fatty acids in cells can be compared to a cellular alarm system that triggers cell death when something goes wrong with the cell. If those fatty acids are full of linoleic acid, they are unable to signal, and the damaged cell is not killed. As a result, dysfunctional cells continue to grow, which then turn into cancerous cells or tumors.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.karger.com/Article/PDF/73797" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Animals typically develop cancer</a> once the omega 6 fats in their diet reaches <strong>4% to 10%</strong> of their energy intake, depending on the cancer. In fact, scientists can actually induce cancer in animal models by <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1665114616301423" target="_blank" rel="noopener">feeding them seed oils.</a></p>
<p><strong>Most humans today are eating 15% to 20%</strong> of their calories from omega 6, so you can see there can be a correlation. Our ancestral human diet is believed to be made up of only about 2% to 3% omega 6 fats, and when intake increases above that level, you will see <strong>significant health problems</strong> start to happen.</p>
<p>When you consume too many omega 6 fats, you make it far more susceptible to oxidative damage, which damages the cells, and in turn relates to higher risks of cancer. However there is some research showing that when the omega 6 linoleic acid is replaced with the oleic acid from olive oil, the cells <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22210054/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">become resistant to oxidative damage.</a></p>

<h2><strong>Seed Oils and Diabetes</strong></h2>

<p>Other research shows that mice fed a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-019-0521-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>diet high in omega 6 fats</strong>, versus a high carbohydrate diet, developed diabetes</a>. The mice became insulin resistant, leptin resistant and obese. Contrast this with mice who were fed a diet high in carbohydrates&#8211;which we generally associate with the development of diabetes. These mice did okay. On the other hand, the mice whose diet was high in omega 6 fats had a breakdown in the mitochondria in their hearts. So, the conclusion one can make here is that just by adding in seed oils, heart damage occurs because of a change in the fatty acids of the cells.</p>

<h2><strong>Seed Oils Age Your Skin and Increase Risk of Skin Cancer</strong></h2>

<p>There is even plenty of evidence showing <strong>eliminating seed oils from your diet</strong> will dramatically reduce your risk of sunburn and premature aging. People with a high intake of seed oils and omega 6 fats have increased inflammation which in turns shows up as sunburn and sun damage.</p>
<p>Susceptibility to UV radiation damage is controlled by the amount of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3128560/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">omega 6 consumption</a> in the diet. Higher omega 3 consumption and lower omega 6 consumption has been shown to control how fast or slowly one can get skin cancer. <em>High omega 3 consumption slows down or eliminates skin cancer, while high omega 6 intake increases the risk of skin cancer.</em></p>
<p>In addition, the inflammation and oxidation from sun exposure and high omega 6 intake also increases the breakdown of collagen and speeds up the aging in the skin. Studies show people with a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20085665/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">higher intake of saturated animal fat</a> have less photoaging of the skin, compared to those who have a higher intake of vegetable oils in their diets.</p>

<h2><strong>Chronic Disease and Vegetable Oils</strong></h2>

<p>High intakes of omega 6 fatty acids increase the pro-inflammatory mediators associated with <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4417548/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asthma</a>, autoimmune diseases, infertility, <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22220460/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">macular degeneration</a>, and osteoarthritis.</p>
<p>One of the most notable takeaways is that <strong>seed oils are especially harmful to the brain.</strong> Too much omega 6 fats can make people much more susceptible to <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17401057/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">depression, anxiety and dementia</a>, due to the increased inflammation in the brain. Canola oil, which we’ve been told is ‘healthy’ is linked to <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-17373-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poor memory, cognitive decline</a> and a higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease.</p>
<p>The trans fats in vegetable oils, which are a result of the heat and processing, are also associated with a higher chance of dementia, as well as <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0032175" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increased aggression</a>.</p>
<p>Other research in mice shows that high levels of linoleic acid increases food consumption and <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22334255/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">encourages weight gain and obesity</a>. Further research shows a diet with high intake of soybean oil in particular, brings on <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26200659/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and fatty liver disease</a>.</p>
<p>Even a mother’s diet high in omega 6 fats is associated with a higher risk of obesity in her children. And children who eat high levels of omega 6’s often have insulin resistance, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4808858/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prediabetes, and obesity</a> when they grow up.</p>

<h2><strong>What About Heart Disease?</strong></h2>

<p>We’ve had it drilled into our heads for the past 50 or more years that vegetable oils are “heart healthy” and help us prevent heart disease. Nothing could be further from the truth!</p>
<p><strong>In fact, oxidized fatty acids from industrial seed oils appear to play a pivotal role in the development of cardiovascular disease.</strong></p>
<p>Researcher James DiNicolantonio has been working on a theory called the “oxidized linoleic acid theory of coronary heart disease” that presents a link between <strong>consumption of linoleic acid-rich industrial seed oils and cardiovascular disease</strong>. His theory includes these points:</p>
<p>• Linoleic acid from our diets from gets into blood lipoproteins (triglycerides and cholesterol).<br />
• The instability of linoleic acid causes oxidization.<br />
• Oxidized lipoproteins activate macrophages which initiate <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23782937/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">foam cell formation</a>, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease.</p>
<p>Industrial seed oils are also a causative factor in <strong>cardiovascular disease</strong> by increasing the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. This high omega 6 to omega 3 ratio <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3335257/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">creates excess inflammation</a> and dangerous clotting effects in the heart and blood vessels. And LDL, the part of cholesterol which we’ve all been taught is the ‘bad cholesterol’ is only dangerous when it is exposed to high levels of omega 6 fats, which cause it to oxidize in blood vessels</p>
<p>Industrial seed oils are also <strong>harmful to our gut health, making conditions like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease)</strong> much more likely. This information leads us to the conclusion that high levels of omega 6 fats can alter our gut microbiome and increase GI inflammation, contributing to the development of IBS and IBD.</p>
<p><strong>Anyone with any type of inflammatory or autoimmune disease should avoid processed vegetable oils and instead consume only natural fats from olive oil, coconut oil, wild seafood, nuts and seeds, and healthy animal fats</strong>.</p>

<p>Most all fried food—unless it is specifically labeled, is fried in vegetable oil (strike one!) and repeatedly heated (strike two!). Restaurants and even home cooks often reuse vegetable oil to fry foods. When vegetable oils are heated over and over again, it further magnifies the toxicity of the oil.</p>
<p>Repeated heating also depletes vitamin E which is a natural antioxidant. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5616019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">It dramatically increases the free radicals that damage DNA, proteins and lipids</a> in the body. This helps to explain why fried foods are associated with <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24632108/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">high blood pressure, heart disease</a>, and liver damage.</p>
<p>Even meat, such as commercially-raised chicken which is fed high LA grains is high in this dangerous fat. And eating more foods high in omega 3 fats may help but will not avoid the problem. As noted researcher, Tucker Goodrich states, “The ratio is not really what’s important. <strong>What’s important is [totally] avoiding the omega 6 fats…”</strong></p>
<p>Avoiding all processed foods, especially fried foods and chips and only eating saturated fats or monounsaturated fats like olive oil is the best way to avoid omega 6’s.</p>

<h2><strong>What About Olive Oil?</strong></h2>

<p>Yes, olive oil also contains LA, but it also has <strong>other healthy fats that help to offset this</strong>. Olive oil contains oleic acid, which is one of the best fats for your body. Oleic acid is highly resistant to oxidation, which is why olive oil is much healthier to cook with. However, olive oil can contain varying amounts of linoleic acid, and many olive oils are cut with cheaper seed oils, raising the LA content even more. So just be aware of how much olive oil you are consuming. It can be detrimental in higher amounts.</p>

<p>Beef fat—even conventionally-raised beef &#8212; is a combination of monounsaturated and saturated fats, and only has trace amounts of PUFA’s. <strong>Grass fed beef is higher in CLA (a healthy fat) and DHA (an omega 3 fat)</strong>. On the other hand, chicken and pork have ten times as much omega 6/LA content of beef, bison or lamb, so if you want to be as healthy as possible, <strong>choose grass-fed RED meat instead of chicken or pork.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Coconut oil</strong> is another healthy saturated fat, and olive oil is monounsaturated, as is avocado oil and the oil from nuts. And butter, my favorite, is mostly all saturated fat, some monounsaturated fat and very little polyunsaturated fat. Grass fed butter is also very high in vitamin K-2, another essential nutrient valuable for heart health.</p>

<p>The newest diet trend is NOT eating. That’s right. <strong>Intermittent Fasting</strong>. It certainly makes sense, given that our primal ancestors went through periods of not eating while searching for food, as well as periods of feasting when food was plentiful. Our bodies were made to adapt to that—not regularly timed, three meals a day, 7 days a week readily available food. So it makes biological sense to skip a meal or two occasionally.</p>
<p>Taking a break from eating has several <strong>proven dramatic health benefits</strong> including <strong><em>slowing down aging</em></strong>, increasing Human Growth Hormone for <strong><em>muscle growth, increasing insulin sensitivity, and overall fat burning.</em></strong></p>
<p>In addition, IF has been shown to <strong>help fight cancer, disease, diabetes, and other serious diseases,</strong> according to <a href="https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/86/1/7/4633143" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this study reported in the <em>American Journal of Clinical Nutrition</em></a>. Additionally, according to <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0306987706000892" target="_blank" rel="noopener">other scientific studies</a>, IF benefits extend to asthma, allergies, infectious diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, Tourette’s syndrome, cardiac arrhythmia&#8217;s, hot flashes from hormonal fluctuations, multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s and more.</p>
<p>Intermittent fasting can also increase energy, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17569758" target="_blank" rel="noopener">help with focus and clear thinking</a>, and improve mood as well. Practicing IF helps reduce symptoms of depression. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24097021" target="_blank" rel="noopener">This study</a> published in the <em>Journal of Nutritional Health and Aging</em> found a <strong>significant reduction in anger, tension, confusion and low mood</strong> in a group of older men who were practicing IF.</p>
<p>Researchers have also found that intermittent fasting <strong>lowers the risk of degenerative brain diseases</strong> like Alzheimer’s, dementia and even helps improve recovery from strokes. <p>During a period of intermittent fasting, the body switches its energy source from glucose (unless you are fully ‘fat-adapted’, to <strong>burning fat for energ</strong>y. When we fast for a longer period of time, we use up all glucose stores and convert body fat to fatty acids or ketones. It is a way of helping to flip your ‘metabolic switch’ and help your body become better at being ‘fat adapted’.</p>
<p>A scientific <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oby.22065" target="_blank" rel="noopener">review</a>, published in the journal Obesity, shows that it is likely that <strong>intermittent fasting may be more healthful than other dieting strategies</strong>, as ketones put less stress on cells than the byproducts of other diets. In addition, IF helps the body become better and more efficient at utilizing fat for energy, especially if IF is done on a regular basis. It also helps the body switch back to <strong>fat burning</strong> if you have gotten off-track and carb heavy with your diet. It is, in essence a way to get back on track.</p>
<p>The point of intermittent fasting is that the periods of food deprivation <strong>allow your body to rest, renew and regenerate</strong>. Plenty of scientific studies on both animals and humans show that periodic fasting not only helps you lose weight but also increases your longevity. Caloric restriction through fasting also helps to turn on genes that repair DNA and cells. This adaptation of IF may allow <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/fulltext/S1550-4131%2817%2930612-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">certain cells to actually live longer</a>, preserving the body’s energy, according to a study published in the journal, <em>Cell Metabolism</em>. This may also be part of the reason that fasting helps to extend longevity as well.</p>
<p>Scientists think that the IF acts as a form of healthy stress that revs up the <strong>cellular defenses against molecular damage</strong>. Fasting mice have been found to have higher levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is a protein that prevents stressed neurons from dying. Low levels of BDNF have been tied to depression, anxiety, and dementia.</p>
<p>Fasting also ramps up autophagy, a kind of garbage-disposal system in cells that gets rid of damaged molecules, including ones that have been connected to<strong> Alzheimer&#8217;s, Parkinson&#8217;s and other neurological diseases.</strong></p>
<p>Intermittent fasting has also been shown to <strong>reduce cancers</strong> resulting from oxidative damage, and to help maximize the positive effects of chemotherapy, while minimizing the negative effects of cancer treatment.</p>
<p>The question is—should you try it? Intermittent fasting obviously can be a powerful tool to maximize health, but it’s important to carefully weigh its effects. Intermittent fasting can last for a period of hours or even days, but <strong>generally it entails a brief fasting period of 12-24 hours</strong>. Most of us may already be fasting from dinner time to breakfast, and if you skip breakfast, you are fasting—provided you only drink black coffee, tea or water during your fast.</p>
<p>There are a few primary types of intermittent fasting to follow, and you can switch them around as much as you want—the point is to create episodic eating/fasting/eating similar to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. <p>One of the <strong>easiest ways</strong> to incorporate IF into your routine is to just skip breakfast. Ignore the old saying of “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, and just drink black coffee, tea or water in the morning.</p>
<p>After a full night’s sleep, you wake up with the perfect hormonal terrain for <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">burning fat</span></strong>. Low insulin and high glucagon levels make delaying your first meal an effective strategy for prolonging this fat-burning period.</p>
<h3><strong>Types of Intermittent Fasts</strong></h3>
<p><strong>Skipping Meals</strong>&#8211;Every week or so, skip breakfast and don’t eat until lunchtime or dinner. Or just eat a late lunch and skip dinner and breakfast. <strong>Listening to your body</strong> and eating when your natural hunger occurs, instead of sticking to the meal clock and eating every morning, noon and night is a good way to readjust hunger.</p>
<p><strong>Condensed Eating Window</strong>—One of the more popular and easier to follow IF routines is to condense your food intake into a<strong> set number of hours, usually about 8 hours</strong>. This generally means you eat an early dinner, and a late breakfast, much like the 16:8 plan. For sixteen hours you avoid eating, and eat only during a compressed time of 6-8 hours during the day.</p>
<p><strong>24-hour Fast</strong>—Generally this works for most people by eating a normal dinner and then fasting until the following evening. Others can choose to extend the fast until the following morning. For many people, this can be a weekly or monthly routine.</p>
<h3><strong>Why Women Should Be More Cautious About Fasting</strong></h3>
<p>Fasting sounds like a terrific way to improve health and lose weight, right? Well it’s a little different for women and there’s a <strong>few things to consider, if you are a woman</strong>, before you jump headlong onto the fasting wagon. Some of the great health benefits do not extend to women.</p>
<p>We women have hormones that help to regulate our cycles and fertility. IF is a hormone stressor, so for men this creates an adaptive response that is positive for health. For women, IF can interfere with fertility and menstrual cycles. Because women’s bodies are meant to nourish and support a pregnancy, our bodies are extremely sensitive to calorie restriction.</p>
<p>Fasting affects the hypothalamus in the brain which can disrupt the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which is responsible for releasing Luteinizing Hormone, and Follicle Stimulating Hormone, both important for menstrual regularity and fertility.</p>
<p>When these hormones cannot communicate with the ovaries, you run the risk of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25201001" target="_blank" rel="noopener">irregular periods, infertility, poor bone health and other health effects.</a></p>
<p>Even if you are not planning on having children, fasting creates nutritional stress, which decreases fertility, and even decreases ovarian size.<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-19013 size-medium" src="https://thenutritionwatchdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1WomanJeansLeft-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" srcset="https://thenutritionwatchdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1WomanJeansLeft-200x300.jpg 200w, https://thenutritionwatchdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1WomanJeansLeft.jpg 283w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px" /></p>
<p>Where IF improves insulin sensitivity in males, females don’t often see the same positive results. In fact, <a href="https://www.marksdailyapple.com/women-and-intermittent-fasting/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one study</a> showed exactly the opposite results—glucose tolerance worsened. One <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22735163" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> compared caloric restriction to intermittent calorie restriction in overweight and obese women. Both groups lost a similar amount of weight, but unfortunately, the intermittent restriction group lost significantly more <strong>lean body mass</strong>. This is muscle, the kind of body mass you want to keep.</p>
<p>Another looked at healthy men and women doing moderate intensity morning cycling either fasted (overnight) or fed (breakfast). Although both men and women displayed greater increases in VO2 max and resting muscle glycogen concentration in response to fasted cycling training, <strong>only men showed greater skeletal muscle adaptations when fasted</strong>. <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20452283" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Women had better muscle adaptations when fed.</a></p>
<p>So what does this mean for women? IF can be beneficial, just be cautious if you are trying to have a baby, nursing a baby or have menstrual irregularities. <strong>Instead of aiming for the longest fast you can tolerate, aim for the shortest fast that gives results.</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Fasting for women is good if:</strong></h3>
<p>• You have significant amounts of fat to lose.<br />
• Your oncologist giving you the go-ahead to try using it to improve the effects of chemotherapy.<br />
