Oregano Oil: More Powerful Than Antibiotics? (Unlike antibiotics, oregano oil kills viruses and parasites too)

I love to travel and was fortunate enough to travel to Colombia, Thailand, Peru, and Nepal last year. While these countries are beautiful, exotic and fascinating to visit, their sanitation, and water supplies—as well as food preparation—are not up to the same standards as we have in the United States. In spite of taking all the usual precautions, both my significant other and I got very ill in Colombia. In fact, we were sick for a good two and a half weeks after we got home, with all the symptoms of a serious Giardia infection, which is an amoebic parasitic infection. Symptoms include: fever, aches, pains, chills, severe stomach pains, diarrhea, nausea, weight loss. It was miserable!

The general conventional treatment for giardia infections is a prescription antibiotic, which as  you probably already know, will wipe out all the beneficial bacteria in your body, as well as the bad stuff. In addition, many infections are now antibiotic-resistant, making them even harder to eliminate with conventional medical antibiotics. Before resorting to antibiotics, I thought I’d try a proven natural remedy first.

After doing some research, I purchased oregano oil capsules, took as directed, and was good as new in 24 hours. Now we never travel without it—and it has saved us numerous times! As soon as I feel any kind of tummy troubles coming on, I start taking the recommended amount as a precaution, and viola! All good! In fact, I can say, that since that trip to Colombia, I have traveled to Thailand, Peru and Nepal and have not had any ‘issues’ whatsoever!

Oregano oil to the rescue!

Oregano has been used all the way back in ancient Grecian times as a highly effective medicinal herb. The Greeks used it for wounds, insect bites, snakebites, digestive and respiratory infections–and for good reason–oregano oil is the ultimate natural antibiotic, antiviral, and antifungal!

Oregano essential oil has been proven scientifically to kill bacteria, viruses, fungal infections, and parasites, including giardia, an amoebic infection. Oregano oil has actually been scientifically proven to be effective against even antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

Oregano oil is also incredibly effective against food poisoning, stomach flu, candida infections, ringworm, eczema, sinus infections, nail fungus, acne, skin infections, insect bites, warts, allergies, and more. However, oregano oil is very strong and can be irritating, so it must be diluted in a carrier oil when using on the skin. When taken internally, it is best to purchase and take as a prepared capsule, so you get the proper strength and dosage.

The active ingredients in oregano oil include phenols, carvacrol (60-80%) and thymol (5%) which provide its antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral and antioxidant components. Other ingredients include terpenes, pinene and terinene which contribute to the antiseptic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anesthetic properties.

All in all, over 800 studies have been conducted on oregano oil and its amazing healing abilities.

Carvacrol is scientifically proven to be highly effective in killing off dangerous staphylococcus, norovirus, E.coli, listeria, campylobacter, and salmonella—all organisms that can cause violent food poisoning. Even better than an antibiotic (which only kills of bacteria), carvacrol is a highly effective antiviral as well. Carvacrol is also an anti-inflammatory aid, and can be used to calm down redness and swelling due to injuries or allergic reactions and insect bites. Studies show carvacrol works against candida overgrowth in the mouth or digestive tract, helps kill cancer cells, and even helps to lower blood sugar.

Oregano essential oil is one of the most potent, versatile natural medicines. Keep it on hand at all times, and you are sure to enjoy its powerful and effective healing properties.  Also, don’t miss this article:

  1. Do you have a particular brand that you would recommend? Trusting of course that you do not have financial ties to it or other benefits besides it’s usage.

    • I also would like to know where I can obtain the oregano oil. Thank you

      • Young’s Living Oil ??Hailey Miranda Aliff with Oilsista’s

        • I have a Plantar Wart on bottom of foot. Would oregano oil help? I understand that warts are a virus.

      • Eden’s garden has had several independent studies on their oils. I personally use them for everything and the work great. I tried young living. They work but cost almost twice as much as Eden’s garden. Eden’s garden does not sell through pyramid sales so can keep their prices reasonable. I can’t afford the prices at young living or do Terra and their oils aren’t any better quality and some are of less quality according to some studies sent out to labs by customers to check for purity and quality.

      • doterra oregano oil is one of the best quality pure essential oils out there.

    • Please go to a Natural Health food store and purchase. It may be a bit more expensive but it is worth the cost! Store bought O.O. is not as potent etc as Health food store! My Health food store owner has a college level degree in this and is GOOD! O.O. even takes warts away as well! It is good stuff!

    • You can buy the prepared oreganol oil, or you can buy pure organic 100% oregano essential oil and make your own with olive oil or grapeseed oil or avocado oil. Google articles on the proportion of oreganol oil to carrier oil. I make my own and it’s been very effective in warding off viruses and infections–8 drops under the tongue at bedtime, or you can buy oregano oil perls from healthfood stores and online stores.

    • North American Herb and Spice Oreganol

  2. Very good. Where can I get Oregano in capsules ?

  3. My husband is 92 and I am 77. We have been on Young Living Essential Oils for almost 10 years. Others have come along since, but most of the university studies have been done w/Young Living. We have had family members try others, but wound up going w/Young Living, when they found out the others didn’t really work, & Young Living did!

    • I agree with Young Living’s effectiveness! I have used them for 18 years and have not had any kind of illness or sickness except in 2006 when I was raking leaves in the spring and the molds gave me trouble

    • Buy some empty capsules (health food store?) that you fill yourself. I’m a dōTERRA Wellness Advocate and we sell Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) oils that are safe for consumption. These are actually beyond organic in purity. We also sell empty capsules. If you are interested in being able to purchase at wholesale, you could go to, hit the login link and then the “Find a Wellness Advocate” and there is a form to fill out for someone to contact you.

      • Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade is something attributed to do TERRA by themselves. If they are better than organic in purity [are they certified organic or something?] THEN WHY DONT THEY SAY SO. It is pyramid selling and very expensive twice as much or more than Florihana Essential Oils which is certified organic and well as other certifications. Been using them for years and much more effective than do TERRA.

    • When I’m sick,, I take a shot glass fill with water and drop 4-6 drops of oregano oil in out via dropper. I will tell you that I haven’t had the common cold longer than 2 days because I use oregano oil and I don’t take it every day. In the winter when I make chicken soup.. I add the oil to the soup it is a way so my kids get the benefit of it. My boys both swear that my soup can “cure” anything lol!

  8. Betty Deyaeger

Does Oregano oil kill beneficial bacteria in the gut? Would I need extra probiotics, like I take after antibiotics?

  9. How to take Oregano oil?Can I take few drops as is?Or do we need to mix it with water or food?Advice please.Thanks.

    • Hi Rosh, for oral use – dilute one drop oil in 1 tsp honey or in 4 oz beverage. For skin application – dilute 1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops carrier oil (jojoba oil, coconut oil, olive oil, etc…).

      • I have had excellent success with using oregano oil full strength and put it on a mole bump on my face by my nose . it took 2 months after applying twice a day with my finger it gradually got smaller and less of a little bump and just wiped off 2 months later.

  11. I have some capsules from a reputable English company. I have been taking them on weekdays (not at weekends). Reading this makes me wonder whether I should save them only for use in suspected ‘tummy upset’ type scenarios ? Do they still work when taken as a precaution, or am I just wasting money, and would do better to treat them as ‘medication’ ?

  12. Hello,
Where can I purchase the oreganic capsules?
How often do I take them?

    Thank you,

  13. Does anyone know if oregano oil is safe for cats? I have a kitty who is currently on Clavamox for a possible UTI and she’s doing okay, but I prefer more natural remedies to drugs. However, cats are ultra sensitive to things that we don’t think twice about. I’ll do further research, but if anyone can answer this, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks!

  14. Can anyone tell me where to purchase oregano oil! Or the capsules? Should I go to a vitamin store?

    • Purchase oregano oil from a vitamin store. For years, I have been using liquid oregano oil in a bottle with dropper.

  15. I had no insurance for two years and used olive leaf paired with oregano oil to treat any infections. It was extremely effective and I keep a supply now.

  16. I could feel a cold sore forming on my upper lip one evening. I woke up a couple times in the night to feel my lip hot and throbbing. In the morning, I had a huge red bump. I dabbed some wild oregano oil on it, then reapplied it 3 minutes later. Within an hour, both the redness and swelling had greatly dissipated. I reapplied the oregano oil and by that night, there was no bump, just a little peeling skin, and very little redness. By the next day, it was healed. Next time I feel a cold sore coming on, I will put the wild oregano oil on it immediately.

    • Thanks for this! I usually just take Lysine, but I have to catch the cold sore at the itching, forming stage in order to prevent it from manifesting. This will help me out when I don’t catch it in time!!

      • I have discovered DMSO for cold sores put a tiny bit on affected area when you first feel it coming and they just disappear. I was amazed.

  17. Can oregano oil be good for asthma? My daughter has moderate to severe asthma ( hospitalized atleast 2 times a year) I am looking for a natural prevention to be able to decrease all the meds. She uses Flovent nd steroids regularly. I just hate giving her all those meds so any natural help would be great. Thank u

    • Sorry that no one seems to have answered your question here. Asthma indicates an improperly functioning immune system. I’m sure oregano oil will help, but you really need to find a functional medicine doctor to really be confident in your interventions. I would immediately try cutting out sugar & wheat, even though it will be hard for a child. If it helps her symptoms, she might be more willing to replace old favorites with new foods. Also, buy organic if a food is on the dirty dozen list. You might look at this pediatrician’s website. Maybe some of her advice about allergies, etc, will be helpful. Praying blessings over this health journey!!

  18. Hi! Do you happen to know how many oregano capsules and how often a child can have them? I think myself and my kids all got parasites from eating farm fresh eggs that weren’t washed correctly. I’m really wanting to get rid of any sort of a parasite if we have one. I’d love to know the answer that question and also thank you so much for the information about oregano oil.:-)

  19. for skin allergy (itchiness), where does one buy oregano oil, and what’s the proportion/mix with olive oil or other carrier? Thank you.

    • Hi Norma,
When using oregano oil topically, you’ll need to dilute 1:3 (1 drop essential oil to at least 3 drops of carrier oil). If it’s your first time, I recommend adding a bit more carrier oil and test a small area on your skin first. Please consult with a physician before using if pregnant.

      • My 3 yr. old granddaughter has eczema really bad and now she has been diagnosed with a rare skin disease (gianotti crosti). Both itch really bad. How would you recommend treating her since she is so young?

  20. Oregano Oil does NOT kill beneficial bacteria in the gut. And you do NOT need to pay high prices for it. You can find it in just about any health food store, either in a dropper bottle, if you don’t mind the strong taste, or in capsules, if you do mind. I have always gotten it in the dropper form and the recommended dose is one drop daily, under the tongue and washed down immediately with water or juice, for a preventative dose. However, if you know you have been exposed to something, or you feel you are coming down with something, take 10 drops as soon as possible and keep taking 10 drops per day until you feel well… but that should not be more than a few hours to a day or two, depending on what you have “picked up.” Then resume the preventative dose. The most economical source of good quality food supplements I know of is (and, no, I am not connected to them in any way except that I am a satisfied customer.) I have also given Oregano Oil to my cat when she started coming down with a respiratory infection (sneezing) but it should, of course, be diluted many times from the amount you would give to a human. I put a single drop in a teaspoon of coconut oil and mixed it very well and then added just a small amount of that mixture – maybe 1/8 teaspoon – to one of her canned food meals for as many meals as it takes for her to stop having symptoms. It was dilute enough that she didn’t seem to taste anything, but it worked. In my experience, Oregano Oil is NOT useful in treating asthma, except maybe in handling any possible underlying infection, and lung infection symptoms do sometimes mimic asthma symptoms (I have had both.) In my experience, Oregano Oil does not cure “the common cold” either. The cold seems to need to run its course. But for the flu Oregano Oil is like a miracle. A very fast miracle! I was coming down with the flu at work one day and did not want a bad mark on my attendance record, since I worked for a company with almost Draconian standards for attendance, and by the time my shift ended I was so sick I could barely drive home. When I arrived home I immediately took 10 drops of Oregano Oil, and fell into bed. I awoke 4 hours later feeling absolutely fine.

    • I have been using oregano oil for years. I too use the bottled liquid oil with a dropper and then wash it down with water. It has been highly effective for flu and easing cold symptoms. It worked very well when I was diagnosed with bronchitis.

    • Oregano is highly poisoning for your cat as the liver cannot breakdown the oil and builds up. So please never ever give an essential oil to your cat without knowing. Oreano is high in phenols and terpenoids which cats cannot properly digest due to a lack of enzyme in the liver, therefore toxic reaction can be caused with a damage to the liver as a result.

  21. I used Oregano oil with my oil pulling . Eventually , I reduced frequency of oil pulling to twice a month . ….Previous to this , I was in danger of losing a tooth,. I am confident that I won’t need a dentist untill they can g`grow new teeth

  22. Oregano oil is also amazing for sinus infections. I put 2-3 drops of essential oil in a boiling pot of water and put a towel over my head. I then just breath deeply with my nose for
about 10-15 minutes. It is amazing.

  23. I have oregano oil from Plant therapy and it tastes so horrible. I put it in a shot glass of Kombucha and drink it. Any other ideas how to get it down?

  24. I have at times used 3 drops of Oregano oil in a tablespoon of coconut oil as an oil pulling solution once a day, When I did not feel well. Thinking I had picked up a mild virus or bacterial infection and have it gone during the second day. I use the “NOW” Brand simply because it is easily available close by. I suggest anyone trying this to use 1 drop in the coconut oil first time as the taste can be quite strong.

  25. I use the Oregano Oil by Gaia. It works great!

  26. How would you use Oregano oil for a staph infection after hip replacement?
